Vitamin D boosts shingles immunity
We explored the connection between vitamin D levels and immunity to varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes shingles, in patients undergoing chronic dialysis. Recognizing that these patients often have weakened immune systems, we set out to see if vitamin D could play a vital role in boosting their immunity.

In a multicenter study involving 88 hemodialysis patients, we measured various vitamin D parameters in their blood and assessed their VZV immunity through specific antibody tests. The results were telling: patients with a vitamin D level of less than 30 ng/ml had significantly lower levels of VZV-specific IgG antibodies compared to those who had sufficient vitamin D. This difference became more pronounced when focusing on patients who were actively using vitamin D supplements.

We found that having a higher level of vitamin D was associated with increased immunity against VZV, highlighting a potential link between vitamin D treatments and shingles prevention. Our findings suggest that boosting vitamin D in chronic dialysis patients could be an effective strategy to enhance their immune response to shingles and, potentially, improve their overall health. However, patients with cancer in the study exhibited lower VZV immunity, indicating that other factors could also influence results.

Local B12 injections reduce shingles pain
We conducted a clinical trial to determine how effective local injections of vitamin B12, specifically methylcobalamin, combined with lidocaine, are in treating pain caused by shingles, known as subacute ophthalmic herpetic neuralgia (SOHN). One hundred and five patients participated, each experiencing moderate to severe pain. They were divided into three groups to receive different treatments: a local injection of methylcobalamin and lidocaine, an intramuscular injection of methylcobalamin with local lidocaine, or oral methylcobalamin alongside local lidocaine.

Throughout the four-week trial, we observed significant pain relief among all groups, but the local injection group reported the most substantial reduction in pain. For example, their pain scores dropped from an average of 6.7 to 2.8, while the other groups showed less improvement. Additionally, most people receiving local injections experienced a clinically meaningful reduction in pain, which wasn't as pronounced in the other treatment groups.

Those in the local injection group also reported significantly less need for pain relief medication by the end of the study, signaling a potential improvement in their overall quality of life while undergoing treatment. Overall, our findings suggest that local methylcobalamin injections, when used with lidocaine, might provide superior pain relief compared to systemic or oral options in patients suffering from shingles-related pain.

Neurological relief

At 50, I wasn't aware my immune system had weakened, leading to Shingles. I experienced persistent neuralgia that hindered daily life. I was prescribed vitamin B12, Methycobal, along with antiviral medication. After discovering this product on iHerb, I bought it immediately after reading reviews praising its efficacy against neuralgia. Thankfully, it has alleviated my symptoms. The small lozenge has a pleasant berry and cherry flavour, and I took one after each meal. I highly recommend it.

L Lysine

Lysine improves herpes symptoms
We explored the effectiveness of lysine supplementation in treating herpes infections through a survey of 1,543 participants after a six-month trial. The findings revealed that a substantial 84% reported that lysine helped prevent recurrences or reduced the frequency of outbreaks.

Notably, only 8% of users described their symptoms as severe while taking lysine, compared to 79% who felt that way without it. Healing times improved significantly; 83% felt lesions healed in five days or less with lysine, while 90% said healing took longer without it. Overall, 88% regarded lysine as an effective treatment.

Awesome product! I adore this Olive Leaf Extract. I first learned about it after contracting shingles on my right arm; I took it immediately, and it significantly aided in my recovery from shingles and made me feel marvellous. My ankles were less swollen, and my joints felt better. I had neglected to take it for a while but felt unwell recently, so I decided to resume. Sure enough, I felt much better. Now, I’ll take it every day for life, and I particularly appreciate this brand as I buy many of Now's products, which are mostly organic and vegan.
