I started taking methylated folate early this summer when I found out my folate levels, which had not previously been checked, were very low. My NP said to skip folic acid supplements because my body probably was not converting folic acid to the usable (methylated) form of folate very well. I learned later that I do have certain methylation-related genetic mutatations. These are not causing me any health problems currently (I am in excellent health), but folate is used in critical chemical processes in the body -- methylation switches on and off various genes contributing to good (or poor) health, it provides building blocks for RNA/DNA, and also helps one make various important neurotransmitters (seratonin, dopamine -- stuff we all need to be happy and functional human beings).
Anecdotally, I think that methyl folate probably has brought low levels of inflammation present in my body down. At my last dentist appointment to have my teeth cleaned, the hygienist told me that the inflammation that had been present in my gums for the last year or two was gone. Yay! Who wants gum disease? Not to mention that oral inflammation is linked to heart disease! I also had my homocysteine levels checked recently for the first time ever and they are normal.
So, I am a believe in taking methyl-folate. And I've had good experience with Doctor's Best products -- they are probably not top of the line, but I always find them to be a good value, especially when one is shelling out money for multiple supplements already
