We explored the effectiveness of nattokinase, a fibrinolytic enzyme derived from fermented soybeans, in managing hypertension. This study involved a systematic review of six randomized controlled trials, encompassing 546 participants. Through a robust methodology, including data extraction and risk assessment, we aimed to determine how nattokinase supplementation could support cardiovascular health.
Our findings indicated that nattokinase significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to a placebo. Specifically, we noted a decrease in systolic blood pressure by an average of 3.45 mm Hg and in diastolic blood pressure by 2.32 mm Hg. This suggests that nattokinase could be a beneficial adjunctive therapy for individuals struggling with high blood pressure.
However, it's important to highlight that while nattokinase may support blood pressure management, its effects on cholesterol levels were less encouraging. The study showed that lower doses of nattokinase could negatively impact total cholesterol and have no significant influence on triglyceride levels. Thus, while nattokinase appears promising for hypertension, the relationship between dosage and lipid levels warrants further investigation.
Overall, our research contributes to the understanding of nattokinase's role in hypertension treatment, highlighting its potential while pointing to areas that need more clarity regarding dosage and lipid interactions.
