The Benefits of Calcium, Reflux Treatment

Medical research suggests that Calcium may potentially be beneficial for preventing or helping with Reflux symptoms. Calcium helps to regulate muscle tone and contraction, including the muscles that control the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is a ring of muscle that acts as a barrier between the stomach and the esophagus, preventing stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus.

One study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found that Calcium supplementation could improve symptoms of Reflux in patients with a weak LES. The study suggested that Calcium supplementation could enhance the function of the LES and improve its ability to close properly, reducing the occurrence of acid Reflux symptoms. Additionally, supplementing with Calcium carbonate, a common form of Calcium, has been shown to have an acid-neutralizing effect in the stomach, potentially reducing acid Reflux episodes.
