We explored the effectiveness of activated charcoal in alleviating bloating and reducing intestinal gas. By conducting a double-blind clinical trial with participants from the United States and India, we gathered insights from diverse dietary habits and gut flora environments. A total of 99 participants—30 from the U.S. and 69 from India—were involved in our study.
Using lactulose, a type of sugar, we measured breath hydrogen levels to assess gas production in the colon. The results were illuminating. When compared to a placebo, activated charcoal significantly reduced breath hydrogen levels in both groups, showing a clear impact on gas production.
Moreover, we noticed that symptoms commonly associated with gas, like bloating and abdominal cramps, were also significantly improved with activated charcoal in both populations. This suggests that activated charcoal may be an effective option for those seeking relief from the discomfort of bloating.

Charcoal tablets are essential in every home and travel bag. They effectively absorb toxins and help expel them from the body, especially after consuming contaminated food or feeling bloated. I recommend taking 5 to 10 capsules with water when experiencing gas, nausea, or any discomfort. Additionally, avoid using these tablets with regular medications, as they can hinder absorption. Surprisingly, they can also whiten teeth if used correctly.
