Probiotics reduce flu symptomsProbiotic effects on cold and influenza-like symptom incidence and duration in children.
Supports Lactobacillus effectiveness.
We examined how Lactobacillus acidophilus could help reduce cold and flu-like symptoms in young children during the winter months. In this well-structured study, 326 children aged 3 to 5 participated. They were randomly assigned to one of three groups: one received a placebo, while the others were given either Lactobacillus acidophilus alone or in combination with another probiotic, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis.
Over a period of six months, the children in both probiotic groups reported significantly fewer symptoms and shorter durations of ailments compared to those on the placebo. For instance, the incidence of fever dropped by 53% to 73%, while coughing and rhinorrhea (a runny nose) also saw impressive reductions. Children taking probiotics needed antibiotics much less often and missed fewer days of childcare due to illness.
Overall, this study suggests that incorporating daily Lactobacillus acidophilus into children's diets can be an effective approach to bolster their health during flu season. It shows promise as a safe and helpful way to reduce common winter illnesses in young kids.
