Echinacea shows promise for tonsillitisEfficacy of complex herbal compound of Echinacea angustifolia (Imoviral® Junior) in recurrent upper respiratory tract infections during pediatric age: preliminary results.
Combines multiple treatments, difficult isolation
We explored the potential benefits of a special herbal compound that includes Echinacea angustifolia in treating recurrent upper respiratory infections, specifically tonsillitis, in children. This study involved 37 young patients who were suffering from frequent pharyngotonsillitis or otitis media.
The treatment, known as Imoviral® Junior, combines Echinacea with other ingredients like beta-glucan, vitamin C, arabinogalactan, and zinc. Over a six-month period, we observed a significant reduction in the mean number of inflammatory episodes from an average of 3 to just 1.
By the end of the treatment, a notable 77% of children reported fewer episodes of inflammation. Additionally, the overall quality of life score improved significantly, showing promising results. Importantly, no side effects were recorded during the study, suggesting that this herbal compound could be a safe option for enhancing pediatric health during recurrent infections.

We explored how combining Echinacea with Azithromycin (AZT) could impact the treatment of recurrent tonsillitis in children. This study involved three groups of 100 children each, with one group receiving no treatment, another getting Azithromycin alone, and the last group taking both Azithromycin and Echinacea.
Over six months, we monitored the number of tonsillitis attacks and the severity of symptoms. Our findings revealed that the groups receiving either AZT alone or in combination with Echinacea experienced fewer tonsillitis episodes compared to the untreated group.
Notably, those who took the combination showed even better results than those on Azithromycin alone. This suggests that Echinacea may enhance the benefits of AZT in managing recurrent tonsillitis, making it a potentially valuable addition to treatment plans for affected children.

We investigated the effects of echinacea, along with other herbal extracts, on inflammation caused by bacterial antigens associated with tonsillitis. By using human tonsil epithelial cells, we tested how these natural extracts could potentially reduce inflammation typically induced by Group A streptococci.
In our experiment, the tonsil cells were exposed to bacterial components before being treated with various herbal extracts. Notably, we observed that extracts from echinacea, alongside clove, ginger, and danshen root, showed promising anti-inflammatory properties.
Specifically, echinacea extract significantly reduced the secretion of multiple pro-inflammatory substances, which can contribute to the pain and discomfort associated with tonsillitis. Our findings suggest that echinacea, when paired with other herbs, could serve as an effective natural remedy for alleviating the inflammation linked to this common throat condition.
