We set out to explore whether eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a component of fish oil, could play a role in improving cholesterol levels, particularly through its effects on high-density lipoprotein (HDL). In this study, seven healthy adults without cardiovascular disease consumed fish oil daily for 30 days, followed by a month without any supplements.
Our findings revealed that after taking fish oil, certain proteins associated with HDL decreased, while specific phospholipid families increased. Notably, we observed that cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC)—a critical measure of HDL function that indicates how well it can remove cholesterol from cells—increased significantly after supplementation.
This improvement in HDL function was also linked to higher levels of EPA in the blood. Moreover, enhanced HDL capacity to influence inflammatory markers in human cells suggests exciting pathways through which EPA may promote heart health. Overall, our results suggest that eicosapentaenoic acid supplementation can beneficially modify HDL to improve its cholesterol-handling abilities.
