We examined the effects of curcumin, a component of turmeric, on hypertension induced by l-NAME in a study involving Wistar rats. Using both in vitro and in vivo approaches, we set out to see how curcumin influenced key renal features associated with this form of hypertension.
Our findings revealed that hypertension increased both blood pressure and creatinine levels, indicating kidney stress. However, curcumin treatment at doses of 50 or 100 mg/kg/day effectively lowered blood pressure and protected kidney functions, preventing spikes in creatinine. Additionally, curcumin significantly reduced the activity of certain proteins, known as MMP-2 and MMP-9, which play a role in kidney damage and inflammation.
The study demonstrated that curcumin not only lessened oxidative stress but also improved the overall health of the kidneys by restoring enzyme activity related to superoxide dismutase, which combats oxidative damage. Notably, curcumin showed the ability to directly inhibit MMP-2 activity when tested in vitro.
Overall, our results suggest that curcumin can be a beneficial treatment option for addressing hypertension and its associated renal complications. This might open doors for turmeric as a complementary remedy in managing high blood pressure and preserving kidney health.
