I have used Taurine on and off for post-workout recovery. I learned about its antioxidant effects, also possible GABA/calming neurologic effects, and also hypoglycemic effects (*blood-sugar lowering*). I also have read it can prolong the duration of caffeine if they are taken together. I started taking it because glutamine and taurine are the most abundant amino acids in muscle tissue.
I had to stop taking it. Yes, it must be of good quality to feel the effects vs. placebo. I even tried 1/2 capsule. It is calming, about 1 hr. after taking it you can feel the calm. However I think it made me too calm, and my blood sugar too low. I used to take it in the a.m. and couldn't wake up all day.
So, I changed to taking it at bedtime, and felt calm. However, it was almost impossible to wake up in the morning, and I felt hung over for the first half of the day. I finally stopped taking it, and the next day, it felt like a miracle, like I "woke up" again.
Jarrow makes good quality products and I am a repeat purchaser of NAC, Tyrosine, Glutamine, etc..., but I can't use Taurine anymore if I want to be awake and live each day. I hope this review offers balanced and real-world analysis for the reader
