Effective magnesium treatment for vertigoSuccessful treatment of a child with definite Meniere's disease with the migraine regimen.
We explored the relationship between magnesium treatment and vertigo in a remarkable case involving a 5-year-old girl with Meniere's disease (MD). This young patient had been suffering from six months of left-sided hearing loss, followed by troubling daily episodes of vertigo, persistent headaches, and vomiting. She met the established criteria for definite MD, which made her situation particularly concerning for both her and her family.
After initiating a 6-week diet and lifestyle regimen aimed at migraine management, which included magnesium, we observed promising results. The patient reported being symptom-free and showed a significant improvement in her hearing, reaching near-normal levels. This outcome has led us to believe that the vertigo and other symptoms associated with MD may actually be linked to a vestibular migraine phenomenon, suggesting that magnesium and lifestyle changes could play a key role in alleviating these symptoms in pediatric patients.
Our findings suggest that children with MD might benefit from these migraine-oriented lifestyle modifications, highlighting the need for some researchers and caregivers to consider alternative approaches for treating children's vestibular symptoms.

Nonprescription therapies aid vestibular migraineEffects of nonprescription therapies on vestibular migraine: a questionnaire-based observational study.
We conducted a study to understand how nonprescription therapies, specifically a combination supplement that includes magnesium, affect symptoms associated with vestibular migraine (VM). In this observational study, we evaluated 82 patients who were experiencing VM. Participants were advised to improve their sleep, hydration, exercise, and nutrition while taking an over-the-counter supplement containing magnesium along with other ingredients.
The results showed promising improvements in symptoms. Specifically, measures like symptom severity and frequency reported significant reductions. For instance, the dizziness-related score dropped notably, indicating that many participants experienced relief from their vertigo. About half of the individuals reported an improvement in their condition, while a few noted no change at all.
Although magnesium was included in the supplement, it’s essential to recognize that we can't isolate its effect on vertigo based on this study alone due to the combination of ingredients used. However, the overall findings suggest that nonprescription therapies, including those with magnesium, might help manage VM symptoms effectively.

Magnesium aids post-surgery vertigoResolution of Persistent Post-Stapedotomy Vertigo With Migraine Prophylactic Medication.
We conducted a retrospective review at a tertiary academic hospital over 10 years, focusing on patients experiencing persistent vertigo after stapedotomy surgery. Our aim was to explore how magnesium, along with other treatments, could help alleviate these symptoms. We observed that five patients, who had daily episodes of vertigo for over three months post-surgery, all responded positively to treatment.
Each patient received dietary and lifestyle advice targeting migraine prevention, as well as vitamins like B2 and magnesium, and some were treated with medications such as nortriptyline or verapamil. Remarkably, all patients experienced complete resolution of vertigo within an average of nine weeks.
Although we cannot isolate the effects of magnesium alone from other treatments provided, the combination appeared to be effective in addressing the persistent vertigo. This suggests that for some individuals suffering from post-surgery vertigo, magnesium might play a beneficial role when included in a broader migraine management strategy. However, further studies would be necessary to clarify its isolated impact on vertigo symptoms specifically.
