Iodine therapy reduces patient anxiety
Reducing anxiety and enhancing satisfaction in thyroid patients with DietLens application during radioactive iodine therapy: A quasi-experimental study.
Focus on dietary management
In our quasi-experimental study, we explored how a mobile health application, DietLens, could help reduce anxiety in patients preparing for radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, particularly focusing on those following a low-iodine diet.

Conducted at a Singapore hospital, we divided 56 participants into two groups: one received standard care, while the other used DietLens alongside standard treatment. After accounting for dropouts, we ended up with 50 patients who completed the study.

Initially, anxiety levels were similar between both groups, but we observed a notable decrease in anxiety among those using the DietLens app after the intervention. Specifically, the app users had significantly lower anxiety levels compared to the control group.

Moreover, we discovered that all intervention group members expressed satisfaction with the educational materials and overall treatment process, suggesting that digital tools can play a key role in supporting patients during their health journeys.

Thyroid hormones may reduce anxiety
[The role of the mediator and hormonal links of the sympathetic-adrenal system in the anxiolytic effect of close to physiological doses of L-thyroxine under stress].
Limited iodine effect on anxiety
We observed how small doses of L-thyroxine, a hormone associated with thyroid function, might influence anxiety levels in rats exposed to stress. In our study, we used a "time deficit" method to induce stress in 78 white outbred male rats. By administering L-thyroxine and conducting tests to measure anxiety levels, we aimed to understand the hormone's potential anxiety-reducing effects.

Interestingly, stress appeared to activate the thyroid's functions, leading to increased anxiety in the control group. We noted significant increases in specific stress indicators, but chemical sympathectomy—targeting the sympathetic nervous system—did not impact the anxiety levels. However, adrenal removal did lead to heightened anxiety in the animals.

When we administered L-thyroxine, it showed promise by minimizing increased thyroid hormone levels in the blood and counteracting anxiety under stress. These results suggest that L-thyroxine could provide an anti-anxiety effect by limiting the stress response, although the role of the sympathetic-adrenal system remained less prominent.

Overall, our findings shed light on the connection between thyroid hormones and anxiety response in stressful situations. While the study's focus isn't solely on iodine, the utilization of L-thyroxine encompasses the broader context of thyroid health and emotional well-being.

Iodine treatment's limited anxiety impact
Psychological Status and Quality of Life Associated with Radioactive Iodine Treatment of Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: Results of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Short-Form (36) Health Survey.
Anxiety effects not isolated
We explored the psychological status and quality of life in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) who underwent radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment. Our study involved 150 patients who completed anxiety and quality of life assessments using standardized questionnaires before, during, and after their treatment.

The results highlighted a noticeable connection between anxiety levels and the quality of life scores throughout the treatment process. Initially, patients displayed heightened anxiety as measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) before receiving RAI. While we observed improvement over time, particularly 6 months post-treatment, the findings indicated that iodine treatment alone did not significantly alleviate anxiety symptoms.

We concluded that patients generally experienced a gradual enhancement in their quality of life over time. However, it became clear that while RAI treatment may help in general well-being, it did not drastically change the anxiety levels on its own. Hence, continuous monitoring and occasional psychiatric support may be beneficial for these patients.
