We explored the link between vitamin D levels and the frequency and severity of migraines in children. In this study, we reviewed data from 171 pediatric patients diagnosed with migraines between February and December 2022.
Our findings revealed that children experiencing fewer migraines (1-3 attacks per month) had a higher median vitamin D level of 15.6 μg/L compared to those with more frequent attacks (over 3 per month), whose levels dropped to 11.9 μg/L. This suggests that adequate vitamin D levels might be associated with a lower attack frequency.
Additionally, we observed a relationship between vitamin B levels and the duration of migraine attacks. Those with shorter attack durations (2-6 hours) had higher vitamin B levels than those suffering longer attacks (12-24 hours). Furthermore, we noted that patients not receiving prophylactic treatment had higher ferritin levels compared to those who were treated. This indicates that some micronutrient deficiency might be present in patients undergoing preventive therapies.
In conclusion, our research indicates that assessing micronutrient levels, particularly vitamin D, could be beneficial for children suffering from migraines.
