We explored the potential benefits of a garlic-derived compound called diallyl trisulfide (DATS) in combating the H9N2 avian influenza virus. This study specifically looked at its antiviral properties both in human cells and in mice to see if it could provide relief from this infection.
In our research, we treated human lung A549 cells and also utilized BABL/c mice to assess DATS’s effectiveness. We applied DATS before and after the infection and measured its impact on viral loads, inflammatory responses, and overall lung health.
The results were promising. Whether given before or after exposure to the virus, DATS treatment reduced viral loads and led to an improved immune response by increasing antiviral gene expression while also decreasing inflammatory cytokines. However, this product failed to deliver; it didn’t even smell like garlic. I opened a softgel and found no garlic scent, casting doubt on the claim of 1000 mg garlic extract in the product.

Family flu prevention
Is there a result? The whole family took this alongside our prescribed treatments, so the therapeutic effect isn’t overt. However, we all noted a reduction in nervousness, and our emotional states stabilised. We started taking garlic during the autumn flu season, and for the first time, we got through without any of us falling ill. My husband did experience slight dizziness during the first few days.
