We investigated the impact of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium adolescentis on anxiety levels in rats facing acute hypoxia. In our study, 64 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups for comparison. The results showed that rats receiving probiotics exhibited lower oxidative stress and anxiety levels compared to those who did not. Notably, those treated with probiotics went through behavioral tests indicating increased exploratory behavior and decreased anxiety. Overall, our findings suggest that these probiotics offer both antioxidant and anxiety-reducing effects in stressful conditions.

We explored how a novel multi-strain E3 probiotic formula could impact anxiety and other mental health symptoms in a group of 68 individuals with sleep disturbances and mood issues.
Over an 8-week period, participants experienced significant improvements in sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and anxiety levels.
Remarkably, these changes were linked to shifts in their gut microbiome, suggesting that the health of our gut might play a powerful role in our overall mental well-being.

Probiotics reduced anxiety, depressionThe Effect of Synbiotic and Probiotic Supplementation on Mental Health Parameters in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Double-blind, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Trial.
Significant mental health findings.
This double-blind trial explored how synbiotic and probiotic supplements affect mental health and anemia in hemodialysis patients.
With 75 participants, those receiving synbiotics and probiotics showed a notable decrease in anxiety and depression scores after 12 weeks, compared to a placebo group.
However, there was no meaningful improvement in quality of life reported. Interestingly, the treated group also experienced significant increases in hemoglobin levels, which is beneficial.

Probiotics reduced anxiety symptomsEfficacy of a multispecies probiotic as adjunctive therapy in generalized anxiety disorder: a double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Moderate relevance to anxiety treatment
We examined the role of probiotics, particularly lactobacillus acidophilus, in alleviating anxiety symptoms among patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial involving drug-free participants, we found that those taking probiotics along with sertraline experienced a notable decrease in anxiety compared to those on sertraline alone.
However, the probiotics did not show a significant impact on improving overall quality of life. While there were encouraging results on anxiety scores, the limited effect on quality of life suggests more research is needed to clarify these findings.

We examined the effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus on anxiety alongside other symptoms in irritable eye syndrome. In a clinical trial with 40 participants experiencing ocular and anxiety issues, we found that those who received a specially formulated probiotic supplement showed notable improvements in their symptoms compared to a control group.
After 8 weeks, levels of certain immune markers and anxiety symptoms decreased significantly in the treated group, suggesting that targeting inflammation and gut health may provide a new way to tackle anxiety and related disorders.
