We aimed to see how Lactobacillus acidophilus could help with gastrointestinal issues linked to oral antibiotic therapy in patients with ear infections. In our study, participants were treated with either amoxicillin/clavulanate alone or in combination with acidophilus.
Results showed that the combination significantly reduced gastrointestinal complaints and yeast infections. Nearly 89% of patients reported that their infections resolved during treatment. It seems that adding acidophilus can be helpful for those experiencing side effects from antibiotics.

Potential in ear infection treatmentLactobacillus acidophilus VB1 co-aggregates and inhibits biofilm formation of chronic otitis media-associated pathogens.
Promising but variable results
We evaluated how Lactobacillus acidophilus might help with ear infections by analyzing its antibacterial properties, both alone and alongside ciprofloxacin. The study revealed that L. acidophilus effectively co-aggregated with harmful bacteria and showed significant activity against some pathogens associated with chronic otitis media.
Although we found it beneficial in certain combinations, there were also cases where its effects were counterproductive. Overall, while L. acidophilus shows promise as a complementary treatment for bacterial ear infections, its effectiveness may vary depending on the specific bacteria involved.

Nutraceutical aids in ear infection treatmentSingle-Center-Single-Blinded Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy of a Nutraceutical Containing Boswellia Serrata, Bromelain, Zinc, Magnesium, Honey, Tyndallized Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Casei to Fight Upper Respiratory Tract Infection and Otitis Media.
High relevance for pediatric care
We examined whether a specific oral supplementation could help treat ear infections in kids. Children were placed in one of three groups, with two groups receiving a supplement alongside standard treatment, while the control group received only standard care.
After analyzing their conditions, we found that the supplement improved ear and hearing assessments in comparison to the control group. Notably, one treatment group showed significant improvement at the study's end, confirming that the nutraceutical can effectively support treatment for ear infections without side effects associated with conventional pain relievers.

Assessing immune supplements' efficacyThe effects of oral supplements with Sambucus nigra, Zinc, Tyndallized Lactobacillus acidophilus (HA122), Arabinogalactans, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin C in otitis media with effusion in children: a randomized controlled trial.
Moderate relevance in treatment evaluations
We analyzed a study that aimed to see if a mix of immune-boosting supplements, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, could help children suffering from ear infections.
The trial involved nearly 200 kids, divided into groups receiving different dosages over various durations. We found that those receiving these oral supplements showed improved ear ventilation and reduced inflammation over time.
However, while the findings suggest some benefits, further research may be needed to confirm how effective these treatments can be overall.
