For years, I was treating chronic UTIs using UT Answer, a concentrated syrup that includes cranberry concentrate, loving how quickly and effectively it worked while keeping me away from antibiotics. Then the last few months in 2017, I had to accept that even with this product, a UTI I had just wasn't going away. I started taking d-mannose pills with cranberry for daily support, and the bladder pressure/anxiety still did not improve. I went to my PCP and discovered that the actual infection was gone, but the pain continued because I may have developed a whole new problem called INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS (aka Painful Bladder Syndrome), a chronic pain disease that is usually associated with an autoimmune disease. What I did not realize all that time was that cranberry is HIGHLY ACIDIC and that, if you're taking cranberry concentrate that frequently (in my case, daily), and you don't have a healthy, balanced gut (like if you've used a lot of antibiotics in your lifetime or eat a lot of sugar and yeast), you can create painful IC flares. If you think UTIs are hell, IC is much, much worse. Imagine having that maddening UTI-pain and anxiety all day, every day, for the rest of your life that no antibiotic can help with. Doctors will tell you they have no known cause and cure. It is devastating.
I went from being able to consume all my favorite foods and drinks (all acidic like coffee, tea, chocolate, tomato-sauce, etc.) to not being able to touch them because one careless error could lead to a flare that could ruin an entire week. It was depressing for the first week to be afraid of what I consumed to survive. But, because I was writhing in pain everyday as if I had a horrible UTI that would not go away, it was easy to commit to a pure elimination diet, absolutely avoid sugar in all its forms including fruits, and religiously take the must-have supplements that my naturopath insisted to support a true candida cleanse (Complete Digestive Enzymes and AC Formila II before meals and Saccharomyces Boulardii after meals). Everything changed. What I was told by my regular doctor was “incurable” was controlled now with diet and supplements that targeted my systemic candida infection that was predisposing me to UTIs and bladder inflammation. Another helpful supplement is Histaeze (quercetin nettle) for easing the inflammatory response (also awesome for allergies).
For two weeks, while waiting for the diet change and supplements to work, I was in that insane state of anxiety and urgency that only UTIs can create. In the meantime, I followed and joined IC forums and learned that there are statistically 7-MILLION women suffering from this (another 4-million men), thinking they had UTIs all along, and that it can get so bad that people actually contemplate removing their bladder, getting hysterectomies, or even ending their lives because of the debilitating pain. It can all change by simply healing the gut!!! The gut truly is the immune system. I was very fortunate that my case was only "MILD." My symptoms mimicking a UTI have disappeared 100% after having stuck to a strict anti-candida diet for 3 months and healing my gut with the supplements I mentioned. Today, I can eat my favorite foods again without any flareâ€"but I'm always hyper aware about how much I'm consuming so that I continue to nurture my gut. And, to keep my actual UTIs away without any acidic ingredients, I began using NOW's D-Mannose Powder, which I found cheapest here on Amazon.
NOW's powder is PURE d-mannose WITHOUT ANYTHING ACIDIC to slowly burn away at the bladder lining. I haven't had a UTI in a long time thanks to this unicorn of a powder, but when I felt that horrible, familiar feeling of a UTI returning, I worried that NOW's product wouldn't get rid of a full-blown UTIâ€"or at least, not quick enough that I don't give up and see my doctor for another round of Cipro. I followed the recommendations of the top review and began the regimen of: 1-tsp with 2-oz of water, wait 45 minutes to let the d-mannose bind to bacteria, drink 16 to 20-oz of water to flush out the bladder; repeat in 2-3 hours. I did this around the clock for 24-hours. Then, 24 hours later, I finally felt relief and slowed my dosing down to once every 3-4 hours. You just have to get through that first day of hell.
Please be safe, avoid sugar which feeds bacteria, and don't burn away your precious bladder
