We explored the potential of garlic as an alternative treatment for thrush, specifically looking at its effects on Candida albicans in vulvovaginal candidiasis. Our study involved comparing two clinical strains from patients who reported different levels of success with garlic therapy.
Using biofilm assays and antimicrobial susceptibility tests, we examined how garlic, both in fresh extract and as pure allicin, influenced the expression of important genes related to virulence. Notably, we observed that treatment with garlic consistently led to a decrease in the SIR2 gene expression across all strains, which is positive news for those considering garlic as a remedy.
However, when we focused on the gene linked to Candidalysin, known as ECE1, our findings revealed a more complex picture. This gene's expression was increased in certain strains, particularly in a reference strain and in one from a patient who didn’t benefit from garlic therapy. Conversely, we found that the ECE1 gene was down-regulated in a patient who had success with garlic treatment.
Overall, our study highlighted that while garlic may influence the virulence of C. albicans, the effectiveness can vary from one strain to another. This suggests that future research on garlic as a treatment should consider these individual differences in response.

I use garlic for colds (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, pneumonia, bronchitis) as an antiviral and antibacterial remedy. I noticed better clearance of phlegm with no nasal congestion, eliminating the need for vasoconstrictors. My elderly parents with hypertension and a history of heart issues take it to enhance their health and for prevention. It has also consistently aided me with intestinal infections, cystitis (alongside cranberries), and Thrush. Garlic helps combat fungi, as it contains amino acids that prevent cholesterol deposits in blood vessel walls. It reduces atherosclerotic plaques, thrombus formation, and blood cholesterol, thus lowering blood pressure. Its bactericidal properties help maintain health during the cold season, and it’s outstanding to pair with black walnuts in an antiparasitic programme. Our family uses it several times a year.

I regularly take garlic supplements as they act as a natural antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and potent antioxidant. I use them throughout the year to protect myself from viruses and bacteria and to support my fight against Thrush. A tip: consume it after meals to avoid discomfort if you have a sensitive stomach.

Convenient capsules
Was recommended by a doctor for Thrush, and it has improved my immunity. Drinking garlic oil in capsules is very convenient—no unpleasant taste or smell. The dosage in one tablet is perfect for daily intake. I highly recommend it. I have trusted this company for about a decade and find their price-quality ratio very reasonable!
