Fish oil's thyroid interaction effects
Thyroid hormone contributes to the hypolipidemic effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish oil: in vivo evidence for cross talking mechanisms.
We investigated the effects of fish oil, particularly its n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), on lipid metabolism in the context of thyroid health. Our study involved comparing the results in euthyroid (normal thyroid function) and hypothyroid (reduced thyroid function) rats that were treated with fish oil or a control soybean oil.
In the euthyroid group, we observed that fish oil significantly lowered serum triglycerides and cholesterol levels, reduced body fat, and even increased the protein content of the animals. These positive changes were accompanied by higher levels of a thyroid hormone receptor called TRβ1 and enhanced mitochondrial enzyme mGPD in the liver.
However, the results were less impressive in the hypothyroid rats. While fish oil treatment still reduced cholesterol levels and increased body protein content, it failed to lower triglycerides or body fat, and did not boost TRβ1 or mGPD expression. Interestingly, hypothyroid conditions led to an increase in liver levels of a nuclear receptor known as PPARα, but this did not significantly change TRβ1 or TRα expressions.
Overall, our findings suggest that fish oil’s benefits on lipid metabolism could depend significantly on thyroid hormone signaling, indicating complex interactions between these fatty acids and thyroid hormones in liver metabolism. While there were some positive effects of fish oil in hypothyroidism, the potential benefits were not as robust compared to euthyroid conditions.

Fish oil's impact in hypothyroidism
Thyroid hormone is required for dietary fish oil to induce hypersecretion of biliary cholesterol in the rat.
In this study, we evaluated how fish oil affects cholesterol levels in rats with hypothyroidism and its relationship with thyroid hormone treatment. Methimazole was used to create a hypothyroid state in the rats, which were then fed different diets including low-fat chow, corn oil, or fish oil. We closely monitored changes in their serum, liver, and bile lipids before and after administering thyroid hormone.
Interestingly, we found that the fish oil diet only led to increased cholesterol secretion into bile after the rats received thyroid hormone treatment. This demonstrates a complementary effect between fish oil and thyroid hormone, suggesting that the presence of thyroid hormone is crucial for fish oil to exert its influence on cholesterol levels.
Furthermore, the rats on a fish oil diet showed lower serum cholesterol, aligning with the increase in cholesterol secretion into bile and a decrease in cholesterol content in the liver. However, despite these findings, we didn’t see a clear link between fatty acid composition in liver or bile phospholipids and the bile cholesterol secretion. A notable observation was that higher bile cholesterol secretion corresponded with a lower percentage of linoleic acid in the liver and bile.
Overall, our findings indicate that the effectiveness of fish oil in inducing changes in cholesterol metabolism in hypothyroid rats is significantly dependent on the presence of thyroid hormone.
