Our study focused on understanding the effects of marjoram, scientifically known as Origanum majorana, in treating ulcers. We assessed its antiulcerogenic activity using various models of gastric mucosal injury in rats, including stress-induced and chemically induced ulcers.
We discovered that administering the ethanol extract of marjoram at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg significantly reduced the incidence of ulcers, as well as the overall gastric acid secretion. Interestingly, the marjoram extract not only aided in healing but also replenished the gastric wall mucus and nonprotein sulfhydryls, which were depleted due to ethanol exposure.
Additionally, we noted a decrease in malondialdehyde levels, a marker of lipid damage, highlighting the protective effects of marjoram. These findings were further confirmed by histopathological evaluations, supporting marjoram's role as a potential natural remedy for ulcers. Importantly, an acute toxicity assessment indicated a favorable safety profile for this extract in mice.

Oregano oil shows ulcer healing
The effects of intra-rectal and intra-peritoneal application of Origanum onites L. essential oil on 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid-induced colitis in the rat.
We explored how Origanum onites, commonly known as oregano, may help treat ulceration caused by colitis in an experiment using rats. In the study, we tested two different methods of applying oregano essential oil: intra-rectally and intra-peritoneally. This provided us with a clear picture of how effective oregano oil can be compared to a traditional treatment, dexamethasone.
Our results showed that oregano oil significantly improved several markers of colonic injury, such as ulceration and inflammation, especially at a higher dosage. For instance, when we applied 1 mg/kg of oregano oil rectally, we noted major improvements in ulceration and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration compared to the control group that received no treatment.
Interestingly, while dexamethasone has been a standard treatment for this condition, it did not show a significant benefit over the control group in our analysis. This emphasizes the potential of oregano oil as a promising alternative treatment option for colitis-related ulcers, allowing us to think about natural remedies alongside conventional medicines.
Overall, our findings suggest that both intra-rectal and intra-peritoneal applications of oregano essential oil can offer significant protective effects against colonic injuries related to ulceration and inflammation. This study opens the door for further exploration into the practical use of oregano oil in similar health issues.

Oregano honey's therapeutic potential
In Vitro Screening Potential Antibacterial Properties of the Greek Oregano Honey against Clinical Isolates of .
We examined the potential benefits of oregano honey on bacteria associated with gastric ulcers and gastritis. In our study, we tested 14 strains of bacteria—six isolated from gastric ulcer patients and eight from those with clinical gastritis. We used different concentrations of oregano honey, employing the agar well method to observe inhibition zones around each well.
The results revealed that while the bacteria from gastric ulcers had a wide range of resistance (inhibition zones from 0 to 34 mm), the strains from gastritis cases showed more susceptibility, with inhibition zones reaching up to 58 mm. Initially, we noticed that the bacteria from ulcers tended to resist treatment more than their gastritis counterparts, similar to their response to standard antibiotics.
We prepared extracts from the honey using various organic solvents and discovered that hexane and chloroform extracts exhibited the strongest antibacterial effects. Additionally, both pure oregano honey and its diethyl ether extracts effectively inhibited urease production by the bacteria. Overall, we found that oregano honey appears to possess multiple modes of action against the ulcer-related bacteria, supporting its traditional use in folk medicine for treating gastric issues.
