5-HTP reduces TSH in hypothyroidism
We aimed to understand how 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) could impact hypothyroidism, particularly regarding thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. In our study, we observed the effects of 5-HTP on eight patients suffering from primary hypothyroidism who were not receiving treatment.

The results were intriguing; we found that 5-HTP significantly reduced TSH levels in these patients. However, it didn't show the same effect in five healthy individuals, indicating that these changes might be specific to those with hypothyroidism.

It's important to note that despite these changes in TSH levels, other thyroid hormones like T4 and T3 remained stable, and there was no increase in prolactin levels in either group. This leads us to suggest that 5-HTP may have an inhibitory effect on TSH regulation, although we couldn't determine its role concerning prolactin. Thus, while we observed a decrease in TSH levels with 5-HTP treatment in hypothyroid patients, the broader implications and benefits are still not fully defined.

5-HTP shows limited benefit
We observed a study focusing on the effects of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) in rats with hypothyroidism. The research involved male rats that were born to mothers on an iodide-free diet and later treated with methimazole, rendering them hypothyroid.

After the treatment concluded, both euthyroid (normal thyroid function) and hypothyroid rats received an injection of 5-HTP. What we discovered was that the behavioral reactions in hypothyroid rats were significantly milder compared to their euthyroid counterparts. This finding suggests that hypothyroidism may lead to decreased central serotonin function, resulting in reduced serotonergic activity.

While the study provides insight into the behavior of hypothyroid rats in response to 5-HTP, it indicates that treatment might not bring significant improvement in serotonin activity for those with hypothyroidism. Thus, while there is some behavioral impact observed, the extent of benefit from 5-HTP in treating hypothyroidism appears limited.

Better sleep quality

Finally, I sleep and feel refreshed. I had nearly forgotten what restful sleep felt like. With my hypothyroidism, the anticipation of getting enough sleep was often heavy on my mind. A week after starting treatment, I noticed positive changes; I fall asleep easier, feeling completely relaxed. I wake up feeling energetic and my appetite has decreased. Losing weight with hypothyroidism is tough, but I have begun to reach my weight goals.

Calmer and positive
An excellent supplement; I have become calmer and sleep soundly. I began viewing everything optimistically, as depression and nervousness faded. I have thyroid issues (AIT and hypothyroidism) and suffered from frequent heart palpitations. After two months of this supplement, I realised that my palpitations have not bothered me for quite some time, which was a delightful surprise.

Excellent! I take it an hour before bedtime, and my sleep is now uninterrupted. Due to thyroid gland issues, I often woke up around 4 or 5 in the morning feeling utterly broken. I bought this to resolve my sleep issues, as melatonin is not suitable for hypothyroidism.

I accept it because of the depression that haunts me due to hypothyroidism and lack of sleep. I drink to maintain an emotional state. In combination with magnesium and selenium (which I take for hypothyroidism), I have started to feel like a happier person. My husband began to take it too, and a week later he felt that the world had ceased to be so hostile.
