We examined the effects of sulfonated derivatives of a natural polysaccharide, botryosphaeran, on the herpes virus, specifically HSV-1. Two different sulfonation methods yielded derivatives with varying effectiveness. The one treated with mild sulfonation showed significant antiviral activity, successfully inhibiting HSV-1, while the other approach did not demonstrate any effectiveness.

This suggests that the placement of sulfate groups is crucial for attacking herpes. Despite the success with HSV-1, neither derivative worked against dengue virus, revealing a targeted action specific to herpes.

Beta-glucan shows promise against herpes
We set out to understand how a sugar called beta-glucan, derived from the Agaricus brasiliensis mushroom, could help combat herpes simplex virus (HSV). Our methods included various viral plaque assays to assess its effectiveness.

While the standard beta-glucan showed no action, its sulfated version demonstrated significant anti-HSV activity. It helped prevent the virus from attaching to cells and penetrating them, even showing potential to work alongside traditional treatments like acyclovir.

Overall, the sulfated derivative appears to be a compelling option for herpes treatment.

We investigated how Laminaran, a natural beta glucan from brown algae, boosts the body’s antiviral defenses against herpes. Our study focused on the cGAS-STING signaling pathway, crucial for producing type I interferons that combat viral infections.

We observed that Laminaran significantly enhances this signaling both in human and mouse cells when faced with herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). It helped prevent cell death and inflammation, making Laminaran a promising option for treating herpes and similar viral diseases.

Lasiodiplodan effective against HSV-1
We investigated the effects of lasiodiplodan, a type of β-glucan, on herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), particularly strains resistant to the standard treatment, Acyclovir.

Our research showed that its sulfonated version, LAS-S3, can effectively inhibit over 80% of HSV-1 infections through several methods and works even at low doses.

Further testing confirmed its effectiveness in reducing skin lesions in real-world conditions, making LAS-S3 a promising option for treating drug-resistant HSV-1 infections.

We examined how oat beta-glucan (ObetaG) works against respiratory infections, particularly after exercise stress. Our study involved administering a solution of ObetaG to mice before exposing them to a herpes virus after exercise.

We found that those who consumed ObetaG saw reduced illness and less severe symptoms compared to those who didn't. However, when macrophages were depleted, the benefits of ObetaG disappeared, highlighting their role in protection.

Overall, our findings suggest that oat beta-glucan can effectively enhance resistance to infections like herpes after strenuous activity, with macrophages playing a key part.
