Our study focused on a group of adult Swiss albino mice, which we induced with diabetes through a high-fat diet and a low dose of streptozotocin, a compound known to cause diabetes. After confirming the onset of diabetes, we administered Vitamin K2 to one group of these diabetic mice for three weeks while monitoring various health indicators and cognitive functions through behavioral tests.

The results were promising. We observed that Vitamin K2 treatment led to reductions in blood glucose levels and improved measures of cognitive performance. Specifically, it seemed to reverse some of the cognitive decline experienced by the diabetic mice. This improvement was linked to a reduction in neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, which are known to damage brain cells over time. VK2 prevents diabetes-related bone loss
We examined the impact of Vitamin K2 (VK2) on the effects of high glucose in the context of type 2 diabetic osteoporosis (T2DOP). Our research was conducted using a mouse model that mimicked diabetes and a high-fat diet, alongside laboratory cultures of bone marrow stem cells in a high-glucose environment.

Through our experiments, we discovered that VK2 not only helped reduce bone loss linked to high glucose levels but also counteracted a specific type of cell death known as ferroptosis. This was evident as VK2 treatments led to lower levels of harmful compounds like reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation in the bone cells.

Further analysis revealed that VK2 enhanced bone health by boosting key proteins involved in cell survival and bone formation, such as SIRT1 and GPX4. With a total of 96 participants, we divided them into two groups: one receiving daily doses of MK-7 and the other receiving standard care.

Over 24 weeks, we measured changes in arterial stiffness, specifically using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) as our main indicator. While we didn't find a significant difference overall in cfPWV reduction between the MK-7 group and the control group, a notable discovery emerged for participants with diabetes. In this subgroup, MK-7 supplementation led to a 10% reduction in cfPWV while the control group showed a slight increase.

Additionally, the MK-7 group experienced a lower rate of arterial stiffness progression compared to those receiving standard care, particularly among diabetic patients. While our findings underscore the promising potential of vitamin K2 in helping to manage arterial stiffness in diabetes patients on dialysis, further research is necessary to explore its broader cardiovascular benefits.

I take it with vitamin D3, as vitamin K2 prevents calcium from depositing on blood vessel walls. The capsule is small, with a daily dose of 100 μg, and has a neutral taste. Vitamin K2 aids blood sugar control
We dove into an intriguing study that explored how vitamin K2, specifically in the form of menaquinone-7 (MK-7), impacts individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This research was carefully designed as a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, providing reliable insights into its potential benefits.

Over a 12-week period, 68 people living with insulin-independent diabetes were either given 180 µg of MK-7 twice daily or a placebo. We closely tracked changes in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin levels, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), among other measurements.

By the end of the trial, we observed that those taking vitamin K2 experienced a notable decrease in both FPG and HbA1c levels, indicating an improvement in glycemic control. Remarkably, a greater number of participants in this group achieved target levels for these key indicators compared to those on the placebo. However, while insulin concentrations decreased somewhat, there were no significant differences compared to the placebo group after the trial ended. Additionally, MK-7 showed no impact on lipid profiles.

Overall, this study suggests that incorporating 360 µg of vitamin K2 daily may offer promising benefits for managing blood sugar levels in T2DM patients without influencing cholesterol or triglycerides.

No insulin sensitivity improvement observed
We conducted a study to investigate how vitamin K2, specifically in the form of menaquinone-7 (MK-7), affects insulin sensitivity in postmenopausal women. By enrolling 148 participants, we divided them into two groups: one received a daily dose of 375 µg of MK-7, while the other was given a placebo. Both groups were also supplemented with calcium and vitamin D for 12 months.

Throughout the study, we measured key indicators, including undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC), insulin sensitivity through HOMA-IR assessments, and levels of plasma adiponectin and leptin. Our findings revealed that while MK-7 treatment significantly decreased ucOC levels and increased adiponectin, there was no notable change in insulin sensitivity between the groups.

This indicates that, despite the positive changes seen in related biomarkers, MK-7 did not lead to improvements in insulin sensitivity for these healthy postmenopausal women. As such, the notion that ucOC plays a direct role in enhancing insulin responsiveness may not hold true in our findings.

Our findings come from a systemic review that analyzed research articles up to November 2018, focusing on how vitamin K2 may influence diabetes and related health markers in individuals.

Among the studies reviewed, six observational studies were particularly telling. They showed that higher intake of dietary vitamin K and increased plasma levels of vitamin K were linked to a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, six clinical intervention studies suggested that supplementing with vitamin K1 or K2 might positively impact insulin metabolism, which is vital for managing blood sugar levels.

Interestingly, one Mendelian randomization study proposed that higher circulation levels of vitamin K could potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes significantly. These compelling findings indicate that vitamin K plays a prominent role in the prevention and control of this prevalent condition, especially as it pertains to improving insulin metabolism and regulating blood glucose levels.

While the studies suggest some positive effects of vitamin K2 for diabetes management, it’s important to note that they do not isolate the effects of vitamin K2 alone. This makes it somewhat challenging to determine the precise impact of vitamin K2 without additional research focused exclusively on this factor. Nevertheless, the overall evidence leans toward a beneficial role of vitamin K in diabetes management.
