Glutamine mouthwash reduces mucositis
We assessed how glutamine mouthwash stacks up against standard oral hygiene practices in kids with acute lymphoblastic leukemia undergoing high-dose methotrexate treatment.

In a randomized cross-over trial involving 64 chemotherapy courses, children received either glutamine mouthwash or usual care. We found that while both groups experienced mucositis, the glutamine group showed a significantly lower rate of severe cases, shorter duration of discomfort, and less pain overall.

This suggests that glutamine mouthwash could be a beneficial addition to chemotherapy care for reducing the impact of painful mouth sores.

We examined how glutamine impacts cancer treatment and the immune system. Glutamine, the most abundant amino acid in our blood, is vital for cancer cell growth. It fuels immune cell functions that can help combat cancer.

Interestingly, oral glutamine supplementation shows promise—potentially enhancing immune responses and improving chemotherapy outcomes. This suggests that glutamine could be a valuable ally in boosting cancer treatment effectiveness and patient prognosis. However, further research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms and benefits.

Amino acids enhance chemotherapy response
We observed the effects of amino acids, particularly glutamine, glycine, and serine, on chemotherapy sensitivity in gastric cancer cells. By studying 20 amino acids, we found that higher concentrations of these nutrients can improve how well these cancer cells respond to cisplatin—a common chemotherapy agent. This happens because these amino acids can help break down a protein called KDM4A, which otherwise helps cancer cells survive chemotherapy. Although promising, more research is needed to fully understand how nutrition therapy can help gastric cancer patients during treatment.

Targeting glutamine in colorectal cancer
We explored a phase I/II trial investigating how targeting glutamine metabolism alongside EGFR inhibition could influence treatment outcomes for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Our findings indicated that while the combination treatment was tolerable and showed some promising responses, including two patients achieving partial response, the study was halted early due to the termination of one drug's development.

Interestingly, the B-cell activation signature "B-score" surfaced as a potential biomarker for treatment response, prompting further investigations into enhancing therapies for tumors reliant on glutamine metabolism.
