The more I learn about nutrition and health the better decisions I make. I used to buy pure Ascorbic Acid from walgreens or wherever. Later I learned that it likely comes from GMO corn and it has no Bioflavanoids to aid absorption. So I upgraded to Viva Labs and thought I had the good stuff. I've learned recently that Ascorbic Acid is a synthetic formula and that it's not Vitamin C. Vitamin C actually consists of like 6 different working parts and the only way to get it is from whole food or a whole food supplement. The analogy I heard is from Morley Robbins, a well-respected alternative healthcare practitioner, who says that Vitamin C is like a car, and ascorbic acid is just the shell, no engine, no wheels. What he says is that taking ascorbic acid will lower the ceruloplasmin levels in your body and eventually lead to copper deficiency and cause all sorts of problems.
And think about it, is corn really where you want to be deriving your Vitamin C from? Camu-camu, acerola, kiwi, etc... this is where to get it. Of course, it's much more expensive to get the whole food real stuff. The cheapest I found was NOW brands Acerola. This one has a teeny tiny bit of added ascorbic acid, which is negative, but it's a lot cheaper than the rest. Next option up is to buy Acerola or Camu-Camu powder. The pink powders are better than the brown as they were processed at lower heat. Next option up is actual whole food vitamin C supplements. Look for them made by Innate Response, MegaFood, Health Force, Alive!, Pure Radiance, Standard Process, and I'm sure there are others. I'd stay away from the cheap corn-derived stuff
