L-carnitine reduces anxiety symptomsProtective effects of L-carnitine against beta-amyloid-induced memory impairment and anxiety-like behavior in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease.
We explored the effects of L-carnitine on anxiety and cognitive function in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease. To do this, we used an experimental design where rats received an injection of beta-amyloid, a protein linked to Alzheimer's. Over a period of 28 days, we administered L-carnitine and observed its impact on various tests measuring anxiety-like behavior and memory.
The results were quite telling. We found that the beta-amyloid injection led to increased anxiety and noticeable cognitive deficits in the rats. These changes were tied to an imbalance in oxidative stress markers in both the blood and the brain. However, with the administration of L-carnitine, the rats showed improvements: they performed better on tests assessing recognition and spatial memory, as well as passive avoidance tasks.
Our study suggests that L-carnitine could be beneficial not only for memory enhancement but also for alleviating anxiety symptoms linked to Alzheimer’s. By potentially balancing oxidative stress and preventing neuronal damage, L-carnitine opens an exciting pathway for further research in this field.
