Ali R, Irfan M, Akram U, Vaince M, Hassan K, et al. Efficacy of Natural Formulation Containing Activated Charcoal, Calcium Sennosides, Peppermint Oil, Fennel Oil, Rhubarb Extract, and Purified Sulfur (Nucarb®) in Relieving Constipation. Cureus. 2021;13:e18419. doi:10.7759/cureus.18419 We set out to explore how a natural formulation called Nucarb, which contains activated charcoal along with other ingredients like calcium sennosides, peppermint oil, and rhubarb extract, can help relieve constipation. Conducted over two weeks with 1000 participants, this study showed promising results in improving several aspects of constipation. Participants took Nucarb tablets nightly, providing a manageable and convenient means of treatment.
Over the course of the study, we observed significant improvements across key areas. The severity of constipation dropped by over 80%, and feelings of straining and incomplete evacuation were markedly reduced as well. Notably, no adverse side effects were reported, suggesting this herbal formulation is safe for broad use.
In summary, our findings suggest that Nucarb is an effective option for those struggling with constipation issues. The blend of activated charcoal with other natural ingredients not only eases discomfort but also enhances overall bowel function, making it a suitable alternative to traditional laxatives.

Lactobacillus plantarum YS2 alleviates constipationLactobacillus plantarum YS2 (yak yogurt Lactobacillus) exhibited an activity to attenuate activated carbon-induced constipation in male Kunming mice.
We explored how activated carbon influences constipation using Lactobacillus plantarum YS2, a strain derived from yak yogurt. The study involved male Kunming mice that were induced to experience constipation through activated charcoal. We administered LP-YS2 and a reference strain, observing changes in gastrointestinal function and various hormonal levels.
Our findings revealed that mice treated with LP-YS2 showed improved bowel movement, with noticeably faster defecation times compared to the control group. This suggests that LP-YS2 may help alleviate constipation symptoms effectively. While it was interesting to see the role of activated carbon in this context, this study focused more on the benefits of LP-YS2 rather than the charcoal itself. Thus, while we saw positive results from the probiotic treatment, the direct impact of activated charcoal on constipation wasn’t the primary focus of our investigation.
