DHA lowers cholesterol; boosts metabolism
We aimed to investigate how docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) impacts cholesterol levels and brain glucose metabolism. In our study, we focused on aged SAMP8 mice, dividing them into two groups: a control group and one receiving DHA supplementation.

Our results revealed encouraging changes; the group that received DHA showed a decrease in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased. More importantly, we observed improvements in glucose metabolism in various brain regions, including the cortex and hippocampus.

Potential cholesterol-lowering synbiotic

DHA benefits cholesterol management
We explored the effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on cholesterol levels, based on a systematic review of randomized controlled trials. This research focused on the potential cardiovascular benefits of DHA, particularly its impact on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.

According to the findings, DHA is effective in raising HDL cholesterol, which is considered protective against heart disease. In fact, DHA appears to have a greater impact, compared to its counterpart, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Interestingly, while DHA may also elevate LDL cholesterol levels, it simultaneously increases the size of LDL particles, making them less harmful.

Furthermore, DHA was found to contribute to lowering heart rate and blood pressure, which are key factors for cardiovascular health. The research highlighted that both EPA and DHA positively influence platelet function and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, further supporting heart health.

Although the results show that DHA has a series of beneficial effects, the information on its role in cholesterol management needed to be more definitive. More high-quality research is warranted to establish the comprehensive impact of DHA on cholesterol and other cardiovascular risk factors.
We explored the potential benefits of incorporating a diet high in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from locally sourced fish waste into the diets of adult Beagle dogs. Through a crossover study involving two diets—one made primarily of imported shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil (control) and another consisting of locally produced fish hydrolysate and oil (experimental)—we aimed to evaluate how these diets impact cholesterol levels, inflammation markers, and even the health of gut bacteria.

Our findings revealed that the experimental diet led to a decrease in plasmatic triglycerides and hinted at a reduction in total cholesterol, which could suggest an improvement in cholesterol management. However, while we observed changes in triglyceride levels, we found no significant effects on systemic inflammatory markers or on the overall serum cholesterol levels in the dogs. Moreover, the diets did not show a notable impact on blood pressure or heart rate.

Despite the promising nutrient profile of the experimental diet, the lack of significant changes in some key health markers indicates that simply increasing DHA and EPA through this dietary approach might not yield immediate or profound improvements in high cholesterol. This underscores the complexity of dietary impacts on health, which deserve further investigation, especially in terms of long-term effectiveness and changes in gut microbiome health.

Overall, our study suggests that while locally sourced fish products may replace traditional sources without negative effects, the benefits on cholesterol management remain to be fully understood.
