Oregano oil shows anticancer potentialEvaluation of Bioactivity of Essential Oils: Cytotoxic/Genotoxic Effects on Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines, Antibacterial Activity, and Survival of Lactic Acid Bacteria.
Evaluates oregano's cancer effects
We sought to understand how oregano essential oil (EO) affects cancer cells, particularly colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. Our study involved human colon carcinoma cell lines and various essential oils, including oregano.
We discovered that oregano exhibited strong cytotoxic effects, meaning it could potentially kill cancer cells. In fact, among all the oils we tested, oregano showed the highest effectiveness with significant damage to the DNA of the cancer cells and increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
We found that after just 24 hours of exposure to oregano oil, the cancer cells displayed notable responses, indicating that this natural substance might play a role in combating CRC. While we also explored the antibacterial properties of several essential oils, oregano stood out as particularly effective against harmful bacteria.
However, other oils like peppermint, lemon, and lavender did not show the same effects on cancer cell viability. This highlights oregano's potential as a beneficial ingredient in cancer treatment, distinguishing it from some other essential oils that did not impact lactic acid bacteria survival but had anticancer effects.

Our exploration centered on understanding the potential benefits of oregano, specifically essential oil from Origanum punonense, in combating cancer and infections. The study identified key phytochemical components in the oil, and we applied various tests to assess its effects on cancer cell growth and its ability to fight bacterial infections.
We found that the essential oil contains a wealth of phytochemicals, with carvacrol being the most prominent. When tested at a concentration of 500 µg/mL, the oil demonstrated significant antiproliferative activity across different cancer cell lines. This suggests that oregano oil might help slow down the growth of cancer cells, presenting an intriguing avenue for further research.
Moreover, the oil exhibited strong antimicrobial properties, battling several harmful bacteria and fungi, including those linked with diabetic foot infections. The broad-spectrum activity of oregano oil may hold promise for treating infections, especially in patients with weakened immune systems. However, as we uncovered its remarkable characteristics, it's important to recognize that our findings mainly point toward its effectiveness in managing infections rather than as a standalone cancer treatment.

We investigated the potential of oregano essential oil, specifically Origanum majorana Essential Oil (OMEO), as a treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In our pre-clinical study, we utilized two well-known human NSCLC cell lines, A549 and LNM35, to see how OMEO affected their growth and viability. To our satisfaction, we found that OMEO significantly reduced the viability of these cancer cells and inhibited the growth of their colonies in a concentration-dependent manner.
The oil worked partly by inducing a specific type of cell death, which is crucial for combatting cancer, and it reduced levels of a protein linked to cancer survival. We also observed that OMEO slowed down tumor growth in live models, including those implanted with A549 and LNM35 cells. Excitingly, it hindered the migration and invasion of these cancer cells and decreased the occurrence and growth of metastasis in the lymph nodes when tested in mice.
Remarkably, despite some three months of treatment with OMEO, the mice showed no adverse effects on critical body functions like blood or liver health. This suggests that OMEO not only offers a robust anticancer effect but also does so safely.

Oregano extracts show cancer potentialCytotoxic Activity of Polyphenol Extracts from Three Oregano Species: , and and Antiproliferative Potential of against Two Types of Breast Cancer Cell Lines (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7).
Direct impact on cancer treatment
We explored the potential of extracts from three different oregano species in combating breast cancer. This study examined how these polyphenol-rich extracts interact with breast cancer cell lines, specifically MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7.
The extracts were carefully prepared from dried oregano leaves. We assessed their antioxidant activity, total phenol content, and the types of phenolic acids and flavonoids present using advanced chromatography techniques.
In our tests, one particular oregano extract stood out, demonstrating excellent antioxidant properties. It significantly hindered the growth of both breast cancer cell lines without harming normal fibroblast cells. This non-cytotoxic effect was quite similar to that of cisplatin, a common chemotherapy drug.
These promising results suggest that oregano extracts could be a valuable source for future cancer research, especially regarding their antiproliferative mechanisms. We believe our findings offer fresh insights into natural treatments for breast cancer.

We explored the effects of oregano extract on MDA-MB-231 cells, a type of aggressive breast cancer known as triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Our study found that this extraction from oregano, specifically its aqueous form, inhibited the growth of these cancer cells and triggered processes leading to cell death.
We observed that the oregano extract not only curtailed cell viability but also stimulated autophagy, a process that helps cells clean out damaged components. Additionally, it spurred apoptosis, which is the programmed death that can prevent the spread of cancer.
Notably, we found that the extract increased the ability of the cells to adhere to one another, which could inhibit their migration and spread. Furthermore, there was a reduction in key proteins that usually promote cancer cell invasion and inflammation. Our results also showed that oregano extract prevented new blood vessel formation, further indicating a potential to hamper cancer progression.
Overall, our findings suggest that oregano extract could be a promising approach in managing aggressive breast cancer, especially given the limitations of current treatment options for TNBC.
