The effects of L-theanine (SuntheanineĀ®) on objective sleep quality in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to see how L-theanine affects sleep quality in boys aged 8 to 12 diagnosed with ADHD. Over six weeks, participants took either L-theanine or a placebo.
The results showed that 400 mg of L-theanine daily significantly improved sleep quality in these children. Since many kids with ADHD struggle with sleep issues, this suggests L-theanine could be a beneficial addition to managing ADHD symptoms. Future research with larger groups is encouraged.

Exploring L-theanine and cognition in ADHD
Effects of L-theanine-caffeine combination on sustained attention and inhibitory control among children with ADHD: a proof-of-concept neuroimaging RCT.
We examined the effects of L-theanine and caffeine on cognitive functions in boys aged 8-15 with ADHD. In this study, we used a careful method to administer L-theanine, caffeine, their combination, and a placebo to the boys.
We found that L-theanine significantly improved overall cognition compared to the placebo. The combination of L-theanine and caffeine also produced positive effects on cognitive performance, revealing potential benefits for attention and inhibitory control. However, caffeine negatively affected these areas, while L-theanine showed a slight worsening trend in inhibitory control.
Overall, L-theanine combined with caffeine may be a promising option for helping children with ADHD, though more research is needed.

What a Godsend! I saw on the television that Theanine was being tested with children who have ADHD. I recommend TwinLab and just 100 mg for kids. I have ADD, as does my daughter, and I love this stuff for meāfar better than any antidepressant or anxiety medication I have taken! We are calmer now and donāt feel anxious anymore. I believe everyone should use Theanine. I prefer this brand above others, as it even gives me some extra energy. The best part isāthere are no side effects that I have noticed! My mother and mother-in-law enjoy it as well!

Calm and comfortable

Really good! As an adult with ADHD, L-theanine significantly helps me feel calm and comfortable. I finished one bottle and quickly ordered a second, highlighting its effectiveness.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. The symptoms typically present in early childhood and can continue into adolescence and adulthood. Individuals with ADHD may find it challenging to focus, organize tasks, follow through on instructions, and regulate their emotions. Hyperactivity can manifest as excessive fidgeting or an inability to remain seated in structured environments, while impulsivity may lead to hasty actions without considering the consequences.
Diagnosis of ADHD involves comprehensive assessments, often including behavioral evaluations and standardized rating scales, to determine how symptoms impact the individual’s daily life. Treatment can vary widely and may include behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, and medications such as stimulants or non-stimulants, aimed at improving attention span and impulse control. Understanding ADHD is crucial, not only for effective management but also for reducing stigma and promoting awareness. As our understanding of neurodiversity expands, more resources and support systems are becoming available to help those with ADHD thrive in both academic and social settings.
L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid most commonly found in tea leaves, particularly green tea, and is known for its potential calming effects. While caffeine can lead to increased alertness and focus, L-theanine promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness, making it a popular supplement among those seeking to enhance their mental performance while also managing stress. It is believed to work by influencing the production of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which can positively affect mood and cognitive function.
Many users report that L-theanine may enhance the benefits of caffeine, leading to improved focus and reduced feelings of jitteriness when consumed together. This unique combination is often sought after by students and professionals during periods of intense concentration or study. As a dietary supplement, L-theanine is available in various forms, including capsules, powders, and tea, allowing individuals to choose the method that best fits their lifestyle. Typically, dosages range from 100 to 400 mg per day, depending on the intended effects and individual tolerance.
While L-Theanine is often discussed for its calming effects and ability to promote relaxation without sedation, there is limited research specifically addressing its efficacy in treating ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). This amino acid, primarily found in green tea, can enhance focus and attention, which are crucial symptoms for those with ADHD. Some anecdotal evidence suggests that L-Theanine may help alleviate stress and anxiety, potentially providing individuals with ADHD a better environment to concentrate.
However, it's important to note that while L-Theanine may have benefits for stress reduction and improved cognitive function in some individuals, relying on it solely for the management of ADHD is not advisable. Comprehensive treatment plans often include behavioral therapy and, in many cases, medication. Always consult with a healthcare provider before adding any supplement to your routine, particularly for managing conditions like ADHD, as individualized treatment is key to effective management.
Based on user reviews, the timeline for experiencing results from L-theanine as a supplement for ADHD can vary, but many users report noticing improvements in focus, mood, and calmness within a relatively short timeframe. For instance, some users have experienced significant benefits within just a week of consistent use Read Review. Others have found fast-acting effects, feeling calmer and clearer-headed within 20 minutes after taking the supplement Read Review.
Moreover, several reviews suggest that repeated use over a few weeks leads to more noticeable improvements in overall ADHD symptoms, like decreased stress and improved focus and sleep quality Read Review. It appears that while some may experience immediate effects, a commitment to daily dosing over a couple of weeks can yield the most profound changes in symptoms Read Review.
L-theanine, a compound found in tea, has shown promising effects in managing ADHD symptoms based on scientific research. A study examining boys aged 8-15 with ADHD highlighted that L-theanine significantly improved overall cognitive performance compared to a placebo, particularly in the areas of attention and inhibitory control when paired with caffeine [1]. However, it's important to note that caffeine had some negative effects, indicating that while L-theanine has potential, its interaction with caffeine needs further exploration.
In addition to cognitive benefits, another study focused on sleep quality indicated that L-theanine could also aid in alleviating sleep issues commonly experienced by children with ADHD. This randomized, double-blind trial revealed that a daily intake of 400 mg of L-theanine significantly improved sleep quality in boys aged 8 to 12 diagnosed with ADHD [2]. Considering that sleep disturbances can exacerbate ADHD symptoms, L-theanine may serve as a valuable supplement for managing this condition. However, further research is necessary to validate these findings and determine optimal dosages.
Users report a range of improvements in ADHD symptoms after incorporating L-theanine into their routines. Many reviewers express a newfound sense of calmness, with one user noting a reduction in anxiety and an increase in energy levels after switching to the supplement from traditional medications Read Review. Others highlight significant enhancements in focus and mood, particularly when they forget to take it, underscoring its perceived impact on daily functioning Read Review. Additionally, long-term users mention a better quality of sleep as a notable benefit Read Review.
Some users experienced rapid results, with improvements in concentration and a sense of clarity felt as quickly as 20 minutes after consumption Read Review. This aligns with accounts of diminished brain fog and increased mental clarity Read Review. However, as with any supplement, individual results can vary, highlighting the importance of consulting a healthcare professional when considering L-theanine as a treatment option for ADHD Read Review.
Users report positive experiences when combining L-theanine with other supplements for managing ADHD symptoms. For instance, one user mentioned improved mood and sleep quality when taking L-theanine alongside Dexamphetamine and L-tyrosine, noting a decrease in stress and an overall positive effect on emotional state Read Review. Others have highlighted the effectiveness of L-theanine paired with coffee, enhancing mental clarity and energy without causing jitteriness often associated with caffeine Read Review. This supplement’s compatibility with various ADHD medications and other nutritional supplements appears beneficial, suggesting a way to blend existing treatment plans with natural alternatives.
Moreover, additional combinations involving other nootropics, like Lion's Mane, have reported significant improvements in focus and energy throughout the day, indicating that users strategically incorporate L-theanine into broader supplement regimens to optimize their concentration levels Read Review. Overall, these user testimonials reflect a consensus that L-theanine not only stands well on its own but also has the potential to interact positively with other supplements and medications in managing ADHD symptoms effectively.
L-Theanine has emerged as a potential ally for children with ADHD, especially in improving overall cognition and sleep quality. According to a study that administered various doses of L-Theanine, it was discovered that a daily intake of 400 mg was effective in enhancing sleep quality in boys aged 8 to 12 who were diagnosed with ADHD [2]. While the study highlighted the benefits of L-Theanine in managing sleep-related challenges often faced by these children, it also indicated that more comprehensive research could help solidify its role in ADHD management.
Moreover, another study examining the impact of L-Theanine, in combination with caffeine, showed significant cognitive improvements among boys aged 8 to 15 with ADHD [1]. This suggests that while 400 mg can support sleep, the cognitive benefits of L-Theanine may be bolstered when paired with caffeine, although caution is advised, as the caffeine component can have negative effects on attention and control. Ultimately, a tailored approach considering both sleep and cognitive performance may yield the best outcomes for children with ADHD.
