Iron boosts mental health in pregnancyAssociations between iron status and psychosocial wellbeing among pregnant women in Cape Coast, Ghana: a longitudinal study.
Relevant impact on anxiety found
We examined how changes in iron levels during pregnancy relate to anxiety and overall wellbeing. The study followed pregnant women in Cape Coast, Ghana, tracking their iron status and psychological health throughout the first, second, and third trimesters.
Our findings indicate that improvements in iron levels from the first to the second trimester significantly reduced anxiety, especially concerning fearful feelings. The numbers showed that women who enjoyed better iron status experienced less anxiety, which suggests iron supplementation might play a helpful role in enhancing mental health during early pregnancy.
However, we also noted that as iron levels changed from the second to the third trimester, there was a surprising rise in anxiety. Despite initial improvements, some aspects of quality of life declined, indicating the complex relationship between iron status and mental wellbeing.
Overall, this study sheds light on the importance of monitoring and managing iron levels in expecting mothers, as it may impact not only physical health but also emotional wellbeing.
