Citicoline and CoQ10 protection study
Neuroprotective Effect of the Combination of Citicoline and CoQ10 in a Mouse Model of Ocular Hypertension.
Combination effects on hypertension examined
We investigated how a combination of citicoline and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) might impact retinal cell health in a mouse model of ocular hypertension (OHT). Using four groups of mice, including those receiving the combination treatment and a control group, we aimed to understand if these substances could protect against the loss of retinal ganglion cells, which is a major concern in glaucoma.

The treatment was started 15 days prior to inducing ocular hypertension with a laser and continued until we examined the mice about a week later. Our findings were promising: the combination of citicoline and CoQ10 led to a temporary reduction in eye pressure shortly after treatment. Furthermore, it significantly prevented the death of specific retinal cells that are vital for vision.

While we were encouraged by these results, especially regarding cell protection, it's important to note that there were no significant impacts on neurons in the visual pathway areas we studied, like the dLGN. Overall, our research suggests that this combination might offer neuroprotective benefits in specific aspects of ocular hypertension, paving the way for further exploration into treatments that go beyond only lowering eye pressure.

Concern for hypertension
I've been taking this vegetarian CoQ10 for almost five months, delaying my review to assess its effects. I chose this brand due to my positive experiences with other NOW Foods supplements. With a family history of heart issues, I am particularly cautious about future hypertension. Having had high blood pressure readings at my doctor's (possibly due to "white coat" syndrome), we opted for a watch-and-wait strategy after consulting my doctor, rather than immediate medication. CoQ10 deficiency correlates with hypertension, and I've read evidence suggesting it may reduce hypertension. My at-home blood pressure readings have decreased slightly. However, this cannot solely be attributed to this supplement, as I have also increased exercise and reduced salt intake. Although experiencing no side effects, it's crucial to note that CoQ10 supplementation should be paused weeks before surgery.
