I have many years of experience as a funded NIH principal investigator, administrator, and director of academic programs and initiatives in neuroscience, health disparities, and diversity, and enjoy serving as a mentor, teacher, and researcher. Currently, I serve as director of the Center for Health Disparities and Molecular Medicine at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. My research focuses on studying molecular and cellular processes associated with neuronal injury, nerve regeneration/degeneration, and neuropathic pain. Along these lines, my laboratory is examining the role (s) of fatty acid-binding proteins and omega 3 fatty acids in these cellular processes. My interest in health disparities research and diversity has lead to the establishment of a large pipeline program in the biomedical sciences implementing evidence-based interventions to increase diversity in the scientific workforce. For over two decades our pipeline program has supported the participation of more than 600 students from diverse backgrounds into biomedical and STEM disciplines. I believe that health equity, diversity, and inclusion are essential to have an inclusive and healthy modern society in which individual rights are respected and we work together for the common good.
