Oregano oil fights UTI bacteria
Carvacrol-rich oregano oil and thymol-rich thyme red oil inhibit biofilm formation and the virulence of uropathogenic Escherichia coli.
We evaluated the effectiveness of oregano oil, particularly its main component carvacrol, against urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). To do this, we screened 79 essential oils for their ability to inhibit biofilm formation, a major factor in UPEC's resistance to treatment, especially in cases involving catheters.
Our findings showed that both oregano oil and thyme red oil effectively reduced biofilm formation by UPEC when used at very low concentrations. Additionally, we observed that carvacrol and thymol—the key components of these oils—impacted UPEC virulence. They not only decreased the production of fimbriae, which bacteria use to attach to surfaces, but also hampered the bacteria's swarming motility and hemagglutination.
In further tests, UPEC was more susceptible to being killed by human blood when carvacrol and thymol were present. This suggests that these natural compounds could play a valuable role in reducing both the biofilm-forming capability and the virulence of UPEC, presenting a promising avenue for UTI prevention and treatment in the context of rising antibiotic resistance.

We investigated the potential of a new type of urinary catheter to tackle catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). By incorporating zinc oxide-carbon nanotubes (ZnO-CNT) into a silicone catheter, we explored how this innovative design could inhibit infection-causing bacteria effectively.
Utilizing a combination of laboratory techniques like scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, we analyzed the structure of our ZnO-CNT catheter, which showed promising antibacterial properties. Notably, we found that the ZnO-CNT infusion significantly reduced biofilm formation—one of the main challenges in urinary catheters—demonstrating up to 56% inhibition in bacterial growth compared to standard silicone catheters.
The study revealed that ZnO-CNT not only holds antimicrobial potential but may also provide a more comfortable alternative to existing metal-coated options, like those using silver or gold. With our findings, we hope to present a viable strategy for reducing the discomfort and risks associated with traditional catheters while addressing a prevalent healthcare concern.

[Antiadhesive strategy for non-antibacterial prophylaxis of recurrent lower urinary tract infections].
We investigated the effectiveness of a biological additive, Ecocystin, which includes inulin and D-mannose, aimed at preventing recurrent lower urinary tract infections (LUTI) in women. The study included 74 women aged between 21 and 75 years, all of whom had experienced recurrent LUTIs. After initial treatment, participants were divided into two groups. The main group received Ecocystin, while the control group did not receive any supplementation.
Over the course of the study, we monitored clinical indicators and gathered results at various intervals: on the third day, and again after three and six months. Notably, the inclusion of D-mannose in Ecocystin was highlighted for its antiadhesive properties, which can help prevent bacteria from sticking to urinary tract walls. While inulin was part of the formulation as a prebiotic, the isolation of its effects in the context of this study is challenging given its combination with D-mannose.
Our findings indicated that Ecocystin was effective in reducing the recurrence of LUTIs, presenting it as a viable alternative to traditional antibiotic treatments. Given the rising concerns over antibiotic resistance, remedies that employ mechanisms like those provided by D-mannose are increasingly important in urinary health.

D-Mannose Plus to Prevent Urinary Tract Infections and Discomfort after Cystoscopy: A Single-Center Prospective Randomized Pilot Study.
We aimed to see if D-Mannose plus could help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) and discomfort in patients who underwent cystoscopy. In this single-center pilot study, patients were split into two groups: one received D-Mannose plus and the other did not.
Results showed that those taking D-Mannose plus had no positive urine cultures after the procedure, while 18.8% of the control group did. Furthermore, patients in the D-Mannose plus group reported significantly lower pain and urinary symptoms post-cystoscopy.
However, overall quality of life scores didn't differ significantly between the groups.

The Association between Serum Vitamin D Levels and Urinary Tract Infection Risk in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
We set out to explore the connection between serum vitamin D levels and urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children. Our thorough investigation involved a systematic review and meta-analysis of various studies, including 12 case-control studies and a cross-sectional study. This comprehensive analysis incorporated data from a total of 839 children suffering from UTIs and 929 healthy controls.
Through our analysis, we observed that children diagnosed with UTIs had notably lower levels of serum vitamin D when compared to healthier counterparts. The findings indicated that low vitamin D levels were indeed associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing a UTI, with a significant increase in this risk for children whose vitamin D levels fell below 20 ng/mL. Specifically, children with vitamin D levels under this threshold had a much higher risk of developing UTIs.
Overall, our review strengthens the case for considering vitamin D levels as a potential risk factor in urinary tract infections among children, especially when those levels drop below the critical point.
