Fermented soy improves constipation reliefIncremental effects of fermentation of soybean on its nutrients, flavor profile and laxative regulation in experimental constipated rats.
Limited isolated protein effects
We investigated how protein from probiotic-fermented soybean powder affects constipation, particularly in an experimental setting. Rats were used to test both fermented and non-fermented soybean powders for their laxative effects.
After eight days of fermentation, we noticed significant changes in various nutrients. While the polysaccharides in the soy decreased, the flavonoid levels first went up before swiftly dropping later. Importantly, we found that the fermented soybean resulted in higher levels of isoflavone aglycones, which showed promise for digestive health.
The fermented soybean powder outperformed its non-fermented counterpart in relieving constipation symptoms in rats treated with diphenoxylate. This was largely due to alterations in specific proteins and factors in the colon that help manage water and mucus in the digestive system.
Additionally, our metabolomic analyses suggested that several compounds, including linoleic acid and bile acids, might play roles in regulating constipation. Our findings reveal that fermentation not only enhances the nutritional quality of soybeans but also strengthens their ability to aid digestive health.

Bacillus subtilis improves sow healthEffect of dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis QST 713 on constipation, reproductive performance and offspring growth performance of sows.
Protein linked but not isolated
We conducted a study to explore how dietary supplementation with Bacillus subtilis QST 713 can influence reproductive performance, perinatal constipation, and the growth of piglets. By analyzing two groups of multiparous Landrace-Yorkshire sows—one on a standard diet and the other receiving Bacillus subtilis—we aimed to understand the broader effects of this probiotic on sow health and offspring.
Our findings revealed that the sows receiving Bacillus subtilis had shorter parturition times and lower stillbirth rates. Interestingly, sows on this diet showed improvements in their fecal scores, which suggests a reduction in constipation during the perinatal period. Moreover, the supplementation significantly boosted the protein level and IgM content in colostrum, enhancing the nourishment quality available to piglets.
Although the study primarily focused on the beneficial effects of Bacillus subtilis, the increase in protein levels in colostrum may have played a role in addressing constipation. It’s important to note that these outcomes are part of a multi-faceted intervention, making it challenging to pinpoint protein's standalone influence on constipation precisely. Overall, the supplementation showed promise in improving sow health and promoting the growth of healthy piglets.

Diabetes management beverage studyDevelopment of a sodium hyaluronate-enriched therapeutic formulation with stevia glycoside and mogroside V for the comprehensive management of diabetes and its complications.
Relevant to protein and constipation
Our exploration into the management of diabetes and its complications led us to develop a unique beverage formulation. This drink combines stevia glycoside, mogroside V, and sodium hyaluronate, known as SMH-B, which offers a sweet taste without affecting blood sugar levels.
In our study, we found SMH-B to be more than just enjoyable; it plays a key role in addressing various health issues related to diabetes. These include improving skin moisture and elasticity, alleviating constipation, and even reducing signs of depression.
Importantly, we observed that SMH-B helped lower blood glucose and lipid levels as well, proving to be a multifaceted approach to diabetes management. Such findings indicate that integrating protein in our beverage formulation could possibly enhance digestive health and symptomatic relief for those struggling with constipation.
