Calcium's uncertain headache impact
Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome Secondary to Escitalopram.
We explored the connection between calcium treatment and headaches, particularly in patients with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS). In this case, we observed a healthy young woman who had been using escitalopram for a long time. She presented with bilateral neurological deficits, and after treatment with intra-arterial calcium channel blockers, her symptoms improved significantly.
However, it’s important to note that while calcium channel blockers were administered, the study does not specifically isolate calcium’s effects on headache relief. This combination of treatments makes it challenging to understand how much calcium alone contributes to alleviating headache symptoms, if at all.
As we considered the overall findings, it became clear that while calcium channel blockers can lead to symptom improvement in RCVS, the direct impact of calcium on headaches remains uncertain. Therefore, individuals experiencing thunderclap headaches, especially those on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, should consider RCVS as a possible diagnosis, but we cannot definitively conclude that calcium treatment is effective for headaches based on this case alone.

Catechins from tea reduce headaches
Effect of Catechins on Upper Respiratory Tract Infections in Winter: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blinded Trial.
We conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial to explore how consuming catechins from green tea affects symptoms like headaches during upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). Our participants were healthy individuals who either received a bottled beverage containing 490 mg of catechins or a placebo without any catechins.
Impressively, we observed that those in the catechin group reported significantly reduced headache durations compared to the placebo group. Specifically, our findings showed a substantial improvement, highlighting the positive influence of catechins on not only headaches but also other URTI symptoms such as nasal congestion and running nose.
By integrating daily catechin consumption from bottled drinks, we discovered that these compounds can indeed help alleviate some discomforts associated with URTIs. Overall, this suggests that a simple addition to our diets, like enjoying green tea, could be beneficial in reducing the severity of headaches when dealing with winter colds.

Theanine has been a lifesaver during a challenging time in my life. My pressure was erratic, leading to various health issues, but after a month of consistent intake, I feel much better. There are moments when the stress resurfaces, but they are less frequent and easier to manage. My sleep has improved, and my mind is clearer—minor forgetfulness is less bothersome. The pressure stabilised, which has lessened my headaches. I feel calmer and can handle everything with more ease. I might consider increasing to 200 mg of theanine in the future for even greater tranquility, as it holds a top spot in my first aid kit.

MSM linked to lower migraine impact
Acute migraine medication adherence, migraine disability and patient satisfaction: A naturalistic daily diary study.
We dived into how adherence to acute migraine medications influences migraine severity and patient satisfaction. Over three months, participants diligently recorded their migraine experiences in daily diaries.
With 337 adults participating, the findings showed that those using migraine-specific medication (MSM), especially when pain was milder, reported the best outcomes. This included less daily disability and greater satisfaction with their medication.
Our results suggest that starting treatment with MSM may lead to a better quality of life for migraine sufferers.

Coenzyme Q10 shows effectiveness against migraines
A Comparative Study on the Efficacy of Coenzyme Q10 and Amitriptyline in the Prophylactic Treatment of Migraine Headaches in Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
We investigated the effectiveness of coenzyme Q10 in treating migraines in children, comparing it with the commonly prescribed medication, amitriptyline. Our study involved 72 children, aged 5 to 15, who met the criteria for migraine diagnosis set by the International Headache Society.
Over a three-month period, we observed that coenzyme Q10 had positive therapeutic effects, particularly for those requiring long-term treatment. While amitriptyline provided quicker results, the differences between the two treatments in effectiveness were not significantly noticeable after three months. Both treatments led to improvements in the quality of life for the children involved.
Importantly, we noted that children taking amitriptyline experienced more side effects compared to those receiving coenzyme Q10. This finding positions coenzyme Q10 as a promising option due to its comparable effectiveness and better tolerated adverse effect profile.

Vitamin C intake reduces migraines
Association between dietary vitamin C intake and migraine in adults: A cross-sectional study of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
We aimed to understand how dietary vitamin C affects migraines by analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 1999 to 2004. In this survey, we identified adults who reported experiencing severe headaches or migraines over the past three months.
Our findings were quite revealing. Out of 4,101 participants, 702 individuals reported having a migraine, which represents about 17% of the group. We discovered an interesting trend: higher dietary vitamin C intake seemed to correlate with a lower likelihood of experiencing migraines. Specifically, participants with the highest vitamin C intake had a 36% reduced odds of suffering from migraines compared to those with the lowest intake.
We employed various statistical methods to confirm our results, including logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression, which showed a clear linear relationship between vitamin C intake and the frequency of migraines.
Overall, this study suggests that increasing our dietary vitamin C might help minimize migraines, which is promising news for those who suffer from these intense headaches. However, as with all studies, further research is necessary to solidify these findings and fully understand the relationship between vitamin C and headache relief.

Zinc reduces migraine symptoms
Assessing the Effect of Zinc Supplementation on the Frequency of Migraine Attack, Duration, Severity, Lipid Profile and hs-CRP in Adult Women.
We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to explore how zinc gluconate affects migraine symptoms in women. Sixty participants, with an average age of 35, were given either 15 mg of zinc per day or a placebo for 12 weeks, allowing us to measure the impact on headache frequency, duration, and intensity.
The results were quite promising; zinc supplementation significantly reduced how often headaches occurred, shortened their duration, and decreased the severity of the migraines reported. Participants in the zinc group experienced notable improvements, as indicated by their responses to the headache severity scale and a disability assessment questionnaire.
Furthermore, we found that zinc also had a positive effect on certain health markers. The serum levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) decreased with zinc supplementation. However, we didn’t observe significant changes in triglycerides or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels after adjusting for baseline values.
In conclusion, zinc supplementation appears to hold beneficial effects on migraine severity and frequency, offering a potential alternative for those who seek relief from these debilitating headaches.

Curcumin improves migraine symptoms
Effects of Curcumin Supplementation on Clinical Features and Inflammation, in Migraine Patients: A Double-Blind Controlled, Placebo Randomized Clinical Trial.
We conducted a thoughtful investigation into the effects of curcumin, a natural compound found in turmeric, on migraine sufferers. This study involved 44 women with migraines, who were randomly assigned to receive either 500 mg of curcumin twice a day or a placebo for eight weeks. The team measured various factors, including the severity, duration, and frequency of headaches, as well as specific inflammation markers in the body.
After the eight-week period, we observed noticeable improvements in the group receiving curcumin. Compared to the placebo, participants taking curcumin reported significant reductions in pain severity and headache duration. While there was a slight improvement in how often headaches struck, it didn't reach a level of statistical significance.
Moreover, curcumin supplementation also appeared to lower levels of two important inflammatory markers related to migraines: calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). We didn't see any significant changes in body weight or composition between the groups, indicating that the effects were primarily linked to curcumin's properties rather than any other lifestyle changes.
Overall, our findings suggest that curcumin may serve as an effective, natural remedy for managing migraine symptoms, largely due to its anti-inflammatory benefits.

Vitamin B12 deficiency linked to migraines
The correlation between vitamin B12 serum levels and migraine: a case-control study.
We conducted a case-control study to investigate the link between vitamin B12 serum levels and migraine, which affects so many people but lacks a fully understood cause. Our research included 90 individuals experiencing migraines—split into those with chronic migraines and those with episodic migraines—matched against 90 healthy participants.
We measured vitamin B12 serum levels using a reliable testing method and explored how these levels correlated with migraine intensity, as assessed by two measuring scales. Notably, we found that migraine sufferers had significantly lower levels of vitamin B12 compared to those without migraines.
Chronic migraine patients specifically had even lower vitamin B12 levels than their episodic counterparts. Additionally, there was a noteworthy negative correlation; as vitamin B12 levels decreased, the severity of migraine attacks increased. These findings suggest that vitamin B12 deficiency may have an important relationship with migraine experiences, emphasizing the need for further studies to explore this connection in detail.

Folate intake may reduce headaches
Association between dietary folate intake and severe headache among adults in the USA: a cross-sectional survey.
We examined the effects of dietary folate intake on severe headaches by analyzing data from a large national health survey. The study involved nearly 10,000 participants over the age of 20, where individuals self-reported their experiences with severe headaches.
Through sophisticated analysis methods, including multivariate logistic regression, we discovered that higher dietary folate intake appears to be associated with a lower likelihood of experiencing severe headaches. Specifically, participants who consumed more folate had significantly reduced odds of reporting severe headaches, with the most substantial impact seen in those with the highest intake levels.
Interestingly, we found that women aged 20 to 50 exhibited a non-linear association between folate and headache severity, suggesting that they might benefit from being more mindful of their folate consumption.
This research underscores the potential for dietary folate to play a protective role against severe headaches, encouraging individuals to consider increasing their folate intake for headache prevention.

Eicosapentaenoic acid reduces migraines
A 12-week randomized double-blind clinical trial of eicosapentaenoic acid intervention in episodic migraine.
We conducted a 12-week study to explore how eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) affects individuals suffering from episodic migraines. In our trial, 70 participants were randomly split into two groups—one received 2 grams of fish oil with 1.8 grams of pure EPA daily, while the other group got a placebo made of soybean oil.
The results were quite promising. Those taking EPA reported a significant reduction in the number of migraine days per month, averaging about 4.4 fewer days compared to just 0.6 fewer days in the placebo group. We also noticed a decline in the usage of medication to treat headache symptoms among those taking EPA.
Additionally, participants experienced less severe headaches and improved psychological wellbeing, as indicated by better scores in anxiety, depression, and overall quality of life measures. Notably, women seemed to benefit even more from EPA.
Overall, it appears that high-dose EPA can be an effective preventive treatment for episodic migraines, helping to ease frequency, severity, and even the emotional toll associated with chronic headaches. Importantly, the treatment was well tolerated, with no significant adverse effects reported.

Vitamin D reduces headache risk
New evidence that vitamin D prevents headache: a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.
We explored the potential connection between vitamin D levels and headaches through a thorough investigation using two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis. Our goal was to determine if there’s a causal relationship between high vitamin D levels and the risk of experiencing headaches.
Our findings revealed that higher levels of vitamin D are linked to a lower risk of headaches. Specifically, we found that vitamin D may have a preventive effect, reducing the likelihood of headaches occurring. However, we also observed that there is no evidence to suggest that headaches cause changes in vitamin D levels.
This means while supplementing vitamin D may help keep headaches at bay, headaches themselves do not appear to affect vitamin D levels. This information contributes valuable insights into how maintaining sufficient vitamin D could play a role in headache management.

Vitamin D3 aids migraine relief
Vitamin D3 might improve headache characteristics and protect against inflammation in migraine: a randomized clinical trial.
We conducted a rigorous study to explore how vitamin D3 supplementation might influence headaches in people suffering from migraines. By utilizing a well-structured, placebo-controlled, double-blind design, we included 80 participants with episodic migraines, assigning them either a daily dose of vitamin D3 or a placebo for 12 weeks.
After the study, we observed significant improvements in those receiving vitamin D3. Participants reported fewer headache days each month, shorter headache durations, and less severe pain overall. They also used fewer pain relievers compared to those on placebo, showcasing the potential benefit of vitamin D3 in managing migraine symptoms.
Our findings suggest that vitamin D3 not only aids in reducing headache frequency but may also play a role in addressing inflammation, as evidenced by reduced levels of certain inflammatory markers in the blood. This highlights its possible therapeutic value for migraine sufferers, indicating that a daily dose could make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Vitamin A toxicity's impact on headaches
A Rare Case Report of Benign Intracranial Hypertension Caused by Hypervitaminosis A.
We examined a rare case involving a 13-year-old girl who experienced symptoms of headache and visual disturbances due to benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) related to vitamin A toxicity. This condition was characterized by elevated pressure inside her skull, which led to her experiencing severe headaches, photophobia, and vomiting.
After conducting various tests, including magnetic resonance imaging and a lumbar puncture, we confirmed the diagnosis of BIH. Treatment was initiated with acetazolamide, a medication commonly used to reduce intracranial pressure. Although the study primarily focuses on the condition resulting from vitamin A excess, the use of acetazolamide makes it challenging to isolate the effect of vitamin A on headache relief specifically.
What's particularly noteworthy in this case is the significant elevation of serum vitamin A levels, which aligned with her symptoms. Following treatment, this patient showed a remarkable clinical improvement, including a reduction in papilledema during regular eye check-ups. Within just two weeks after starting treatment, she was discharged symptom-free, highlighting how important it is to consider vitamin A levels in children presenting with similar symptoms.
This case serves as a reminder for clinicians regarding the potential consequences of vitamin A toxicity, especially when evaluating children with headaches correlated to papilledema.

Potassium may moderately affect migraines
Association between dietary potassium intake and severe headache or migraine in US adults: a population-based analysis.
We explored the potential connection between dietary potassium intake and the occurrence of severe headaches or migraines. Utilizing data from over 10,000 US adults gathered through a national health survey from 1999 to 2004, we conducted a thorough analysis.
While we found that higher potassium intake was linked to a lower likelihood of migraines, the relationship appeared to be L-shaped, suggesting that there might be an optimal level of intake rather than a straightforward benefit. There's no strong evidence that potassium dramatically decreases headache frequency, but it does seem to play a role worth noting.

Agomelatine relieves hypnic headaches
Case report: Hypnic headache responds to agomelatine-a potential prophylactic treatment option.
We explored how melatonin-based treatments, particularly agomelatine, can affect headaches, focusing on hypnic headaches (HH). This form of headache typically occurs during sleep, disrupting the rest of those affected. A fascinating case of a 58-year-old woman who experienced these nocturnal headaches for three years demonstrated the potential benefits of agomelatine.
After being prescribed 25 mg of agomelatine at bedtime, she reported an impressive 80% reduction in headache frequency and severity within a month. Remarkably, her headaches completely resolved after three months, allowing her to discontinue the medication.
This case highlights the importance of exploring prophylactic treatments aimed at reducing nighttime awakenings caused by HH. Given the significant impact these headaches can have on sleep quality in older populations, treatments that target melatonin receptors could offer a promising avenue for relieving this condition.

Pediatric migraine treatment with riboflavin
Retrospective Observational Study on Riboflavin Prophylaxis in Child and Adolescent Migraine.
Our examination focused on the effectiveness of riboflavin, a form of Vitamin B2, in treating migraines in children and adolescents aged six to 18. We conducted a retrospective observational study involving 42 patients, where we measured the frequency, intensity, and duration of their headaches.
Remarkably, we found significant reductions in headache days per month, with intensity and duration also decreasing. Most importantly, riboflavin helped decrease the reliance on acute medication and fewer missed school days. We suggest this affordable treatment as a safe option for pediatric migraines.

I purchased these capsules for health rather than beauty, yet I've seen remarkable effects! My nails have become denser and are growing rapidly. My headaches have almost disappeared, and I've felt much calmer, no longer reacting overly to minor annoyances. While B vitamins won’t turn you into a 'vegetable', I’ve found that my sleep quality has improved, and I no longer feel perpetually fatigued. Overall, I'm very satisfied and would definitely recommend them.

My anxiety has greatly decreased, and I've become more confident and calmer. My sleep has normalised, allowing me to fall asleep quickly and stay asleep all night. I no longer suffer from muscle spasms or aching legs, my blood pressure is normal, and I experience headaches much less frequently. Magnesium effectively alleviates headaches caused by vascular spasms, and I recommend it as a pain reliever. The size is optimal, the taste pleasant, and the natural ingredients are beneficial for health.

Carotenoids may reduce migraines
Association between serum carotenoids levels and severe headache or migraine in adults: a cross-sectional study from NHANES.
We investigated the relationship between carotenoid levels in the blood and the prevalence of severe headaches or migraines among US adults. Using data from over 8,900 participants in the NHANES survey, we found a noteworthy inverse association between levels of lutein, zeaxanthin, and several other carotenoids with the incidence of migraines.
While these findings suggest that carotenoids might offer some protective benefits, further research is needed to confirm these results and understand how they work.

Our results suggest that starting treatment with MSM may lead to a better quality of life for migraine sufferers.

Vitamin B6 may aid migraines
Pyridoxine, folate and cobalamin for migraine: A systematic review.
We explored how vitamin B6, along with other B vitamins like folate and B12, might help in preventing migraines. Through a thorough review of existing research, we discovered that while vitamin B6 showed some promise in reducing migraines with aura in adults, the results aren’t as clear-cut for individuals suffering from other forms of headaches. In fact, in the context of treating acute migraine attacks, the benefits of these vitamins have not been supported by strong evidence from studies.
We found several trials that looked specifically at vitamin B6 for migraine prevention. The results were generally positive, especially for those experiencing migraines with aura, where vitamin B6 exhibited significant benefits against placebo in multiple studies. However, when it comes to folate, using it alone didn’t show improved outcomes compared to placebo. Limited data on children and those suffering from migraines without aura prevented us from making definitive conclusions about vitamin B6’s effectiveness across different demographics.
Overall, there’s a potential positive effect of vitamin B6 in managing migraines, particularly in adults with aura. While the safety profile appears favorable, we advocate for more high-quality research to clarify its role in treating various types of migraines.

Higher folate intake reduces headaches
Association between dietary folate intake and severe headache among adults in the USA: a cross-sectional survey.
This cross-sectional study analyzed data from nearly 10,000 adults to investigate the link between dietary folate intake and severe headaches. We found that individuals with higher folate intake were less likely to report severe headaches. For example, those in the highest intake category showed a notable decrease in headache prevalence. Interestingly, this connection seemed especially relevant for women aged 20-50, suggesting they could benefit from increasing their folate consumption. Overall, while the findings indicate a potential protective effect of folic acid, they highlight the importance of a balanced diet for headache management.

The study revealed a significant link between iron deficiency anemia and chronic daily headaches. Interestingly, those with severe anemia experienced more intense headache symptoms.
While other iron-related factors were associated with headaches, the type and duration of headaches did not seem to vary significantly among patients.

Lactobacillus treatment's potential efficacy
The probiotic Shirota attenuates symptoms of vestibular migraine: a randomised placebo-controlled double-blind clinical trial.
We investigated the effects of the probiotic Shirota on vestibular migraine symptoms in a clinical trial involving 204 patients. Over four months, participants received either Shirota or a placebo.
At the two-month mark, we didn’t see significant benefits from Shirota. However, by the end of the study, those taking Shirota reported greater improvements in dizziness and anxiety compared to the placebo group.
This suggests that Shirota could be an effective treatment option for managing vestibular migraine symptoms, though further research with a larger group is necessary.

Selenium shows promise for migraines
The effect of selenium supplementation on oxidative stress, clinical and physiological symptoms in patients with migraine: a double-blinded randomized clinical trial.
We explored the effects of selenium supplementation in a double-blinded trial involving 72 patients with migraines. Over 12 weeks, participants received either selenium or a placebo. We observed that those taking selenium experienced reduced headache frequency and severity.
Additionally, selenium improved antioxidant levels and lowered oxidative stress markers. However, it appears that many other factors related to migraine symptoms did not see significant changes. While this research shows promise, further studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

Subjective relief, no objective benefit
Effects of energy drink ingestion on alcohol intoxication.
We evaluated whether mixing energy drinks with alcohol influences intoxication levels. In our study, 26 young volunteers consumed alcohol alone, energy drinks alone, or both combined, with assessments of breath alcohol content and effects on coordination and sensation.
Participants reported feeling less intense symptoms like headaches and weakness after drinking the two together. However, our objective tests showed that these subjective feelings didn't translate to real improvements in motor skills or reaction times. The energy drink didn’t affect breath alcohol levels either, indicating no real benefit in terms of safety or coordination.

Almond oil is my favourite oil at present. I use it on my skin, rubbing a few drops onto my face, which becomes soft and radiant without flaking. It's versatile and serves as a base oil for mixing with any essential oil. Combined with mint, it works excellently for headaches; I apply it to my temples and forehead. Furthermore, I've tried it as a hair mask, and many have praised it. I opted for a larger quantity and highly recommend it!

Significantly reduced headaches

For years, I suffered from severe monthly cramps and headaches. Various doctors only prescribed the pill, which created more issues. I decided to try Dong Quai based on a review. After taking two a day, I noticed a remarkable difference. My energy and mood improved significantly. Instead of needing painkillers every couple of hours, I now only need them a few times for a lighter period. My headaches, which occurred frequently, are much less intense now. I wish doctors had informed me about this sooner.
