Taurine-xylose improves constipation in rats
We investigated how taurine-xylose, a synthetic form of taurine, impacts constipation caused by loperamide in a rat model. By using different treatment groups, including a control and a standard laxative, we observed that taurine-xylose not only improved gastrointestinal movement but also enhanced antioxidant activity.

Our findings revealed that rats treated with taurine-xylose had increased fecal output and better metabolic conditions compared to those given loperamide alone. While promising, the research suggests that its effectiveness may vary based on dietary conditions and physiological factors.

Turmeric Curcumin

9
Curcumin improves IBS-C symptoms
We set out to explore the effects of curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, on constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). This condition affects a significant portion of the global population, making it essential to investigate potential treatments.

In our assessment, we compared the effectiveness of curcumin to mosapride, a known treatment, by observing changes in gut microbiota and neurotransmitter levels in rat models of IBS-C. Through analysis, we found that the rats receiving curcumin experienced improved bowel movements, characterized by increased fecal weight and water content compared to those with IBS.

Furthermore, our investigations revealed that curcumin treatment led to a reduction in certain neurotransmitters in the serum of the rats. This suggests that curcumin may not only help regulate gut health but also impact the signals that influence bowel function.

Overall, these findings indicate that curcumin could be a promising natural option for managing IBS-C by modifying gut microbiota and balancing neurotransmitter levels.

Garlic

9
Garlic polysaccharides aid constipation
We explored how garlic-derived polysaccharides could help relieve constipation while also enhancing gut health. In this study, we administered different doses of garlic polysaccharides (GPs) and a positive control, inulin, to Kunming mice. We paid close attention to their effects on various intestinal barriers and how they might alleviate constipation symptoms spurred by loperamide.

Our findings indicated that GPs not only improved the expression of vital proteins and mucins in the small intestine but also had a positive effect on gut bacteria. The garlic polysaccharides increased beneficial compounds like butyric acid, promoted the growth of healthy gut bacteria, and helped balance gut microbiota. Notably, GPs also showed promise in easing loperamide-induced constipation by improving bowel movement frequency and stool consistency.

This study highlights the potential of garlic polysaccharides in supporting intestinal health and alleviating constipation, suggesting they may serve as beneficial prebiotics. Overall, we found that incorporating garlic into the diet could enhance gut function and promote comfort in those struggling with constipation.

Herbal formulation aids constipation relief
We conducted a clinical trial to determine the efficacy of a new herbal formulation, including foeniculum vulgare, for treating postoperative constipation (POC) in trauma patients.

This trial involved 61 orthopedic patients suffering from constipation after surgery for hip and lower limb fractures. With a triple-blind and placebo-controlled design, half the participants received the herbal laxative capsule while the others got a placebo.

Our main focus was to evaluate how well the herbal formulation alleviated constipation symptoms and improved stool consistency.

The ingredients, including foeniculum vulgare, were chosen for their traditional and documented laxative properties.

The results were promising; we observed that the herbal capsule significantly improved the symptoms of constipation in patients who often deal with opioid-induced constipation.

While foeniculum vulgare played a role in the formulation, its specific effects on constipation are hard to pinpoint since it was combined with other herbs.

Overall, the study suggests that this herbal formulation could be a worthwhile alternative to traditional laxatives, but further larger studies are needed to fully assess each component's efficacy.

BZYQD enhances motility and reduces inflammation
We aimed to understand the effects of Buzhongyiqi decoction (BZYQD) on constipation, particularly how it influences various metabolic pathways. In our exploration, we conducted experiments on rats experiencing loperamide-induced constipation. Following treatment with BZYQD, we observed a notable increase in the small intestinal transit rate, suggesting improved digestive movement.

Our findings also revealed that BZYQD helped to reduce pathological damage in the colon. Interestingly, one of the key factors we looked at was inositol, a metabolite whose levels were significantly affected by the treatment. We discovered that BZYQD not only increased serum levels of inositol but also enhanced the levels of motilin and gastrin, hormones that play important roles in regulating gastrointestinal motility.

Additionally, our analysis showed that BZYQD impacted inflammatory pathways by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and down-regulating markers like cyclooxygenase-2. These effects suggest a comprehensive approach to managing constipation might involve multiple metabolic pathways, with inositol being a notable component. Overall, our study suggests that BZYQD can protect against constipation, with inositol contributing to this beneficial effect, though further studies are needed to isolate its specific impact.

Vitamin C's impact on constipation
We conducted a fully decentralized clinical trial to explore the effects of vitamin C on constipation symptoms. Participants who experienced functional constipation were randomly assigned to receive either Lactobacillus with vitamin C or vitamin C alone over a two-week treatment period. The study allowed us to gather data remotely, which is quite innovative and accessible.

Looking specifically at the results from the group that received vitamin C, we observed that while there was an increase in the frequency of bowel movements compared to the control group, the isolated effect of vitamin C itself wasn't entirely clear. The combination treatment appeared to improve bowel regularity, but it was difficult to determine how much vitamin C contributed independently to these results.

Additionally, we found that about 67% of participants were diligent in tracking their bowel diary entries, which helped ensure the reliability of our findings to an extent. Yet, a significant portion of the records were not kept as scheduled, highlighting potential hurdles in data collection for decentralized trials.

Overall, our observations suggest that while vitamin C, especially when paired with Lactobacillus, may provide some benefits for those struggling with constipation, we should exercise caution before attributing all improvements solely to vitamin C.

Zinc

8
Zinc may mitigate granisetron constipation
We investigated how zinc might play a role in alleviating the constipation effects caused by granisetron, a medication often used to prevent nausea. In the studies, male rats were treated with varying doses of granisetron, alongside zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPPIX), to see how these compounds interacted.

Interestingly, while granisetron was found to increase the time to first defecation in the rats, ZnPPIX alone did not have a notable effect on constipation. However, when combined with granisetron, ZnPPIX successfully reversed the constipation induced by this medication. This suggests that zinc, acting through the heme oxygenase/carbon monoxide (HO/CO) pathway, could potentially mitigate constipation.

Nonetheless, it’s crucial to note that ZnPPIX’s effectiveness was only observed when paired with granisetron; its standalone administration didn’t significantly alter gastrointestinal motility. This highlights a specific interaction rather than a general benefit of zinc in treating constipation.

Pumpkin Seeds Pepitas

9
Fermented soy improves constipation relief
We investigated how protein from probiotic-fermented soybean powder affects constipation, particularly in an experimental setting. Rats were used to test both fermented and non-fermented soybean powders for their laxative effects.

After eight days of fermentation, we noticed significant changes in various nutrients. While the polysaccharides in the soy decreased, the flavonoid levels first went up before swiftly dropping later. Importantly, we found that the fermented soybean resulted in higher levels of isoflavone aglycones, which showed promise for digestive health.

The fermented soybean powder outperformed its non-fermented counterpart in relieving constipation symptoms in rats treated with diphenoxylate. This was largely due to alterations in specific proteins and factors in the colon that help manage water and mucus in the digestive system.

Additionally, our metabolomic analyses suggested that several compounds, including linoleic acid and bile acids, might play roles in regulating constipation. Our findings reveal that fermentation not only enhances the nutritional quality of soybeans but also strengthens their ability to aid digestive health.

9
Wheat peptides improve constipation symptoms
We aimed to see how wheat peptides (WP) could help with constipation. In a trial with 49 participants, those consuming WP experienced an increase of more than two bowel movements per week, compared to just 0.4 in the placebo group.

Not only did WP improve bowel movement frequency, but it also enhanced participants' quality of life and satisfaction regarding constipation. In animal studies, WP improved gut motility and altered gut microbiota linked to constipation.

Overall, our findings suggest that integrating wheat peptides into the diet could be a simple yet effective way to alleviate constipation.

Prebiotic Fiber Inulin

7
Examining inulin's laxative effects
We aimed to understand how different types of soluble dietary fibers, including inulin, help with constipation. Over a 14-day period, we tested the effects of five different fibers on mice that were induced with constipation using loperamide. Our findings showed that while inulin was one of the fibers tested, it did not significantly stand out compared to the others in improving gastrointestinal (GI) transit rates.

However, we observed that inulin did have a positive effect on increasing fecal weight, alongside other fibers. The study highlighted that the unique structures of each fiber, including the monosaccharide composition and glycosidic bonds, played a crucial role in their effectiveness. Inulin, for instance, was connected with the proliferation of certain beneficial bacteria that promote gut health.

Overall, the results indicate that while inulin contributes to constipation relief, it might not be as effective as some other soluble fibers. This research gives us valuable insights into how different fibers can impact gut health and constipation management.

Zinc Magnesium Aspartate

We aimed to explore the possible relationship between dietary vitamin B6 intake and constipation by analyzing data from a large health and nutrition survey. Our study involved 3,643 participants, including 270 individuals diagnosed with chronic constipation.

Through careful examination using logistic regression, we found that higher dietary intake of vitamin B6 was associated with a lower incidence of constipation. Specifically, our results showed that individuals in the highest intake group had about 15% lower odds of experiencing constipation compared to those with the lowest intake.

Additionally, the findings revealed that this beneficial effect of vitamin B6 was particularly significant among males and those who consume alcohol. These results suggest that increasing our dietary intake of this important vitamin could help manage or prevent constipation.

Overall, we observed an inverse relationship between dietary vitamin B6 and chronic constipation, highlighting the need for more extensive research to better understand its long-term effects.

Magnesium

We explored the relationship between magnesium supplementation, defecation, and cognitive performance in elite triathletes. In a carefully designed crossover trial, participants undertook cognitive tests after taking magnesium oxide and after defecation. This study highlighted an interesting potential connection between the state of our digestive system and cognitive abilities.

We found that after magnesium-induced defecation, participants completed cognitive tasks more quickly compared to when they had not defecated. Specifically, the average completion time for the cognitive test dropped significantly after defecation when magnesium was involved. While this suggests that magnesium can aid in relieving constipation, its role in improving overall cognitive function during athletics is also noteworthy.

Although we observed an increase in cognitive performance following magnesium supplementation, it’s important to note that no significant changes in blood flow or oxygen levels were detected in the brain during the test. Instead, we noted decreased oxygen levels in the digestive region, hinting at an increased demand for energy there.

Overall, our findings suggest a potential new avenue for enhancing cognitive function in athletes through magnesium to improve constipation. However, the direct effects of magnesium solely on constipation require further investigation.

Calmness, only calmness. After a few weeks on 400 mg of magnesium daily, my psychosis improved. I observed various deficiency symptoms such as insomnia and cramps. Vitamins

7
Vitamin D3's impact on constipation inconclusive
We explored the effects of probiotic supplementation combined with vitamin D3 on constipation and motor symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's disease. This study focused on a group of patients who had chronic constipation and used a specific probiotic formula.

Over the course of three months, we evaluated 32 patients to see if the supplementation made a difference in their digestive health and overall symptoms. We carefully monitored factors like bowel habits and employed various assessments to track the subjects' progress.

While our findings indicated some benefits from the probiotic intervention, the specific impact of vitamin D3 alone on constipation remains unclear due to the combination with probiotics in our approach. Therefore, we cannot draw definitive conclusions about the effectiveness of vitamin D3 by itself in alleviating constipation. Our research does suggest that the gut microbiome plays a role in managing symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease, emphasizing the importance of ongoing investigations in this field.

This is the second time I have purchased this medication for my child. He enjoys taking them as they are shaped like a lion and taste pleasant (I tell him he will grow strong like a lion😀). Alongside a decent vitamin complex, there is also "intestinal help". My son, aged 6.5, has a tendency towards constipation, but I have observed that his stool has improved with this complex. Occasionally, he develops little "goosebumps" on his forearms and back due to poor bowel function, but these disappear when his stool is regularised with these vitamins. I hope they can assist other children as well. Wishing all good health!

Calcium Magnesium

7
Calcium reduces constipation risk
We explored how calcium intake relates to constipation, particularly focusing on individuals with metabolic syndrome, a condition that significantly impacts health. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2005 and 2010, we assessed the dietary habits of participants and looked at how often they experienced constipation.

Our findings suggest a noteworthy connection: as dietary calcium intake increases, the risk of constipation decreases among those with metabolic syndrome. This suggests that calcium could play a beneficial role in gastrointestinal health.

By analyzing dietary recalls and bowel movement frequency, we provided valuable insights into how making dietary changes can potentially improve symptoms for those affected by metabolic syndrome. This emphasizes the importance of dietary calcium as a simple yet impactful strategy for managing gastrointestinal issues in this specific population.

Folate's role in constipation explored
We formulated a functional food product designed specifically for elderly individuals with Parkinson's disease, focusing on the common issue of constipation. Our approach involved creating a muffin recipe enriched with inulin, cacao, and Moringa, all of which play a role in supporting digestive health.

In this study, we conducted physical-chemical analyses to assess the nutritional components of the muffins, including soluble and insoluble fiber content. Our findings revealed a significant increase in fiber levels compared to control samples, which may alleviate constipation symptoms.

While we noted that the incorporation of inulin and cacao improved the muffins' nutritional value—particularly their dietary fiber and antioxidant properties—it’s essential to clarify that the specific role of folate, a nutrient present in these muffins, was not isolated in relation to constipation. However, the overall enhancements in fiber and nutrition could positively impact bowel health.

Sensory evaluations demonstrated a strong preference from participants, particularly for the muffins enriched with inulin and cacao, indicating potential acceptance of these products among the target population. Our study suggests that muffins fortified with these ingredients could be a practical dietary strategy to aid in managing constipation in individuals facing the challenges of Parkinson’s disease.

Lactoferrin

We delved into the effects of lactoferrin on children suffering from iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) through a systematic review of recent studies.

After examining eleven clinical trials, we found that lactoferrin not only improves essential blood markers like hemoglobin and serum ferritin but also leads to fewer adverse effects.

Notably, one significant benefit we observed was a decrease in constipation among children treated with lactoferrin, making it a preferable option compared to traditional treatments.

Iron

7
Iron's minimal effect on constipation
We explored the effects of low-dose iron supplementation on gastrointestinal complaints, particularly constipation, in pregnant women. Conducting two randomized studies, we aimed to determine how different forms of iron—ferrous fumarate, ferrous bisglycinate, and ferrous sulphate—would affect the frequency of GI issues among healthy women throughout their pregnancy.

Through our investigations, we found that constipation was only significantly associated with higher doses of ferrous fumarate (80 mg/day). Interestingly, women taking lower doses of ferrous fumarate (20-60 mg/day) did not report more GI side effects, indicating that manageable doses of iron may be tolerated without significant worry about constipation.

Among the iron formulas tested, ferrous bisglycinate at 25 mg showed the best profile, resulting in fewer GI complaints overall compared to the others. In fact, it was linked to a lower incidence of black stools, which can often be associated with iron intake. Ultimately, we observed that while low-dose iron supplementation might incur some side effects, they are generally not severe enough to warrant a change in dosage or interruption of treatment.

I started taking it with vitamin C on an empty stomach and in the evening with lactoferrin before bed. It seems to positively impact my digestion and iron absorption. I feel cheery, with no fatigue, and my hair stopped falling out. There’s no metallic taste, no stomach pains, and importantly, no constipation. I find the capsules easy to swallow; just one a day has noticeable effects. I highly recommend it for health.

Beet

7
Beet pectin improves gut health
We investigated how a sour-milk drink enriched with beet pectin could help patients with constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Our study revealed improvements in the gut's microbiome, along with a decrease in harmful bacteria.

In contrast, kefir, which served as a comparison, showed less effectiveness in managing symptoms and did not significantly impact harmful gut microorganisms.

Thus, incorporating beet pectin into dietary interventions appears promising for those struggling with these gastrointestinal challenges.

Sorbitol and sugar exclusion benefits
We examined how dietary changes could impact rapid-transit constipation in children. By asking kids to avoid certain sugars like fructose and lactose, following positive breath tests, we sought to see if their constipation symptoms improved.

Over six months, among 29 participants, we observed significant reductions in constipation severity, abdominal pain, and pain during bowel movements. Additionally, stool consistency improved, suggesting that specific sugar exclusions may greatly help children suffering from rapid-transit constipation.
